Lori shakes her head. “I gather Cecilia is in danger and not Morgan.”
My face crumples in confusion. “What does that mean?”
Lori releases me and turns to Luke. “Is there something she should take with her? I don’t know, for pain or whatever.”
Luke wheels over to a cabinet and pulls out a few items, tossing them into her bag. She spins back to me. “I’ll take you to your cabin if you don’t want to be here anymore.”
“I don’t want that nurse to knock me out anymore,” I say. A rush of panic shoots through me at the thought of experiencing another vision. It’s too much, and I need a moment to collect my thoughts.
“I’ll bring BeLew to the cabin with their watchdogs for a visit.” Lori tries her best at a smile, but it’s strained, revealing her worry.
“I’ll stay with Rowan while you get the boys,” Luke chimes in.
“Why? I don’t need a babysitter. I’m fine.”
“Because I really like your pants,” he answers. “Want a ride?” He pats the top of his thighs.
I flick him off. “Youarefeeling back to your old self,“ I tease. “Lead the way.”
Halfway to my cabin, I almost consider taking him up on his offer. I found pants, so it wouldn’t be a total disaster, but I’m struggling to stand.
“One of us is always injured,” I admit, leaning against Lori. “I used to carry Sam through the hallways like this.”
I crash onto the bed when we arrive, and Lori unpacks a few items, handing a syringe to Luke.
My head aches and the room spins. “What’s that?” I ask.
“It helps with the pain,” Luke says.
“I’m fine,” I lie. “Get BeLew.”
Lori comes and sits on the bed next to me, running a hand down the side of my arm. “Please take it.”
“N-no,” I bite out. The trepidation comes out with my words, and she notices. Pain medication makes people rest, and I can’t go back to sleep right now. Eventually, it will come, and I’ll have to sort out what comes with it, but I need to stay awake.
I need to talk to Sam.
Something shifts in the way Lori looks at me. Her body tenses and she wraps her fingers around my forearm and squints her eyes. “Leave the needle,” she tells Luke. “Can you wheel yourself around on your own?”
“If I can’t, someone will find me,” Luke admits. “That would be a shitty way to die, though. After everything I’ve been through-”
“Yes or no, Luke?” Lori whips her head around and snaps the words at him.
“Yes, my love,” he smiles, setting the needle on the counter and moving toward the door.
“How about you go get the boys? Let us have some girl time.” Lori gets up and lets him out, locking the door behind him.
She strides over, careful with each step, treating me like a wild animal that might bite with sudden movements.
“Now, tell me what you saw,” she orders.
My eyes dart around the room, and I shudder in a breath.
“We have a deal,” she continues. “When I ask outright, you tell me. No one’s here. The boys are safe, and Morgan is… also safe.”
My eyes narrow. “How about we make a new deal?” I snip.
She sits at the edge of the bed, crossing her legs and placing her hands on her lap. “By all means, Rowan, but we don’t have a lot of time to-”
