Lori fiddles with her fingers and bites her lip. “Sam, Cecilia, and Morgan are with the captain.”
Rage boils in my heart from her words. I take what little energy I have left to make a sound that’s a mix between a sob and a scream. I push myself up, only for Luke to shove me back down.
“Feeling better,” I snarl at him. The fury under the surface shouldn’t explode on my friends, but I’m a ball of hate. After seeing Dean over and over again, and then hearing my missing child is with Sam and his…wife,I’m livid.
“Much better,” he beams, ignoring my tone.
“Is Morgan okay?” I ask.
Lori nods. “I wish I could say what happened. After we brought you here, and the search parties started, they found her in a storage room. Someone heard her crying from the hallways. They can only guess that someone placed there her after…”
“After what?” I snarl.
“She doesn’t have a scratch on her,” Lori promises, crossing her heart with her hand. “Same clothes. Same blanket and pacifier. I think someone wanted you, and she was a means to an end.”
“It makes sense,” Luke agrees. “Someone came in here looking for you and knocks out Lori. You aren’t here, so they take the baby, make you run around crazed, and throw any security at that problem.”
“Let me up,” I order.
“Where ya gonna go?” Luke points to the wires connecting me to the bed. “You’re tangled up. Would you like some help?”
I shoot daggers at Luke with my eyes, and he takes my arm, removing the tape on my IVs and monitors.
“What are you doing?” Lori asks.
“She’s going to rip them off herself if I don’t do it. This way, she’s not bleeding all over the place. Someone could slip.”
“Only you could make jokes at a time like this,” Lori snips. She’s fighting back the smile. Luke looks so much better, and he’s got his quip back. Lori’s beaming from the inside out, a new woman now that he’s on the mend and her boys are close. All I can think about is getting out of this bed and finding Morgan and BeLew.
“BeLew?” I ask.
“There still with Caleb’s security team. Round the clock. We don’t want you losing more children,” Luke smirks. He raises his eyebrows and pulls a tube from my arm, making me wince. “Too soon for the joke.”
“I’m glad you didn’t die,” I admit.
He tilts his chin up and smiles. “Me, too.” Another tube slips out and I’m free. “I’ll stop pushing the jokes so that doesn’t change.”
Lori drags over a wheelchair, and Luke makes a face but sits down. “Where are you going to go?” Lori asks.
I give her a sideways glare.
“Well, I’m coming,” she adds. “Seems all I do lately is follow you around. And the commute sucks.”
“I didn’t ask you to,” I argue.
“I’ll save you the lengthy speech about me not having a choice and people dying and all that shit.”
“That would be appreciated. Where are my pants?”
“I think you look just fine,” Luke smirks, craning his neck to see my bare ass. I reach up to smack him and the movement almost sends me to the ground. I stumble and Lori catches me.
“You need to take it easy. I understand you want to find Sam, but what about a quick visit with BeLew first?”
“But Morgan-”
“Is with Sam,” Lori speaks over me. “He was holding her when I last checked.”
“Why is he with Cecilia? She’s not safe with her.”
