Oh! So it did actually come after we slept together.

Interesting. A big smile spreads across my face as I picture love lorn teenage Lexi writing this to me while I was over on the other side of the world. Probably with a romantic notion of long-distance love in her mind. I hope I didn’t disappoint her too much when I didn’t reply, but then I never even received it.

I don’t quite know how to write this to you, but I’m also not sure how else to get in touch with you. I wouldn’t be writing to you if it wasn’t serious, but it is.

I sit up a little straighter as my eyes scan over those words. Something about them makes my heart race a little faster. What does this mean? What could possibly be serious when we were teenagers? I suppose her crush could have gotten a little out of hand.

I will just come right out and say it: I am pregnant. And you are the father. There is no way that anyone else can be the father because I haven’t slept with anyone else.

I drop the letter, watching in shock and horror as it floats to the floor. My heart actually stops beating. My blood is actually ice cold as I reel my brain back, trying to work out the dates. I don’t know how old her daughter is, I have only seen photos. She’s young, but I don’t have any idea how young.

Ineedto find out. I have to know.

“How did Grayson find the picture?” I ask myself out loud as I try to keep myself sane. I don’t want to lose my shit just yet, not when there might not be anything to worry about just yet. It seems that way, but I need to give it a chance, just in case.

“The Internet. Social media.”

I log online quickly and search for the friend that Grayson used. Emily. The one I had looked up before too. It takes me what feels like a long time to find her, probably because my hands are shaking and my stomach is flip-flopping. I could vomit at any given moment.

Once I find Emily, I scroll back with my heart thundering in my ears. It’s almost like there’s a burning sensation in my brain that won’t quell until I throw water on it with the truth. Because what I’m suspecting right now can’t be the truth, can it? There is just no way. Because surely, Lexi would have told me, she would have talked to me, she would have…

“Fuck.” There it is, a baby picture of Mya on Emily’s social media page with her birth date. Nine months after we slept together, Mya was born. That can only mean one thing. There is no other answer here, no other way. Mya is mine and I knew nothing about it.

I sit still for a few moments, staring at the screen, before I race off to the bathroom because I absolutely need to throw up. I can’t keep this inside any longer. My brain races at the speed of light as the thoughts fly through my head. I can’t believe the way that the world is crashing down on me right now.

Nothing makes sense, everything is chaotic.

Mya ismineand I didn’t know her. Lexi was here giving birth to my daughter while I was fooling around in London. That girl is my DNA and I have never laid eyes on her, that doesn’t feel right. I clutch onto my stomach, willing everything to stop.

I’m on a roller coaster, and I can’t get off. I want to get off, but there isn’t any stop sign. What the fuck am I going to do? Lexi lied to me, she kept Mya away from me, why would she do that? If she thought that when I was a teenage boy I could be a father, then why not now? What is wrong with me now? Does she think I’m not good enough?

AmI not good enough? All kinds of self-doubt floods me, I keep on puking.

I don’t like this, any of it. I feel betrayed and wronged. I could have known Mya by now. We could have been spending time together and getting to know one another. I could be on the way to being her father. I was happy to get to know Mya when I didn’t even know she was mine, so obviously I wouldloveto know her now.

But I’m not wanted.

That much is clear. Lexi doesn’t want me, and maybe my daughter doesn’t as well. The rejection stings painfully, I don’t know if I can breathe. The Lexi that I have been enjoying getting to know, looks completely different in my mind.

Now she’s someone who is willing to betray me, willing to harm me with her lies. I don’t know that version of her, she terrifies me. I don’t know what to do with a woman who is willing to have sex with me whilst lying about something so big. Something so life changing.

Ring, ring…

Oh God, I can hear my cell phone ringing. That’s the last thing I need. I could scream with frustration. Why can’t I get even a moment alone in this horrendous madness?

Ring, ring…

I want to cry some more, but I crawl out of the bathroom to find my phone. Just in case this is someone I really need to speak with. Not that I can imagine it…

Ring, ring…

I turn the screen over and blanche when I see the name on the screen. This isnotsomeone I want to talk to while my head is all over the place. But I suppose this is a call I need to take. I’m going to have to face my uncertain future at some point, and that has become more prominent than ever now. I need to dosomething.
