Something real.
Something so good that he’s willing to sacrifice New York City for us and our family.
By the time I explode, the orgasm pushes me onto the floor face first. I don’t have the strength to hold myself upright anymore, so I tumble and shudder through the bliss. My fall slides Josh out of me, he unloads all over my back, crying out my name as if I’m the only woman in the world.
I know we’re going to have a lot of issues from other people if we’re going to make it together, but anything will be worth it to have this sort of joy.
This is wild and carefree; this is pure and everlasting.
It’s what I want for the rest of my life. I just know it.
ChapterSeventeen
JOSH
This is it, isn’t it?
This is how it’s supposed to feel, I’m sure of it. I can’t wipe the smile off my face however hard I try. I know everything is going to be so much better from here on out. Me and Lexi… we really are going to go places. I can just feel it, last night confirmed everything for me.
The funny thing is I have actually heard back from one of the guys in New York who I’ve been desperate to connect with. Brian Johnson is the one person who can help me to get shit off the ground. He’s the best person for me…
After all this time I actually have an email response from him, but instead of immediately responding like I thought I would do, I’ve left it sitting in my inbox and at the back of my mind.
I can deal with New York later. Right now, I have Lexi.
I plan on creeping through the house when I get back in to save me having to answer Mom’s hundreds of questions, but it turns out I don’t have to. I might have perfected the skill of creeping around when I was a teenager and doing things I might not have been allowed to do, but today I find myself very much alone.
Good, because I have a lot to process.
Me and Lexi might have slept together before, but that’s the one time we’ve both wanted to stick around afterward. First time, I had London calling me. At her workplace, Lexi freaked out, but now... well, now it really feels like we might be moving in the right direction at last. Thank goodness, because I’m sure she’s the woman I want.
I kinda want to call all my brothers to give them an update. Wyatt, so I can prove him wrong and let him know everything is good with Lexi. Luke, so he can that I’m getting my shit together while he’s away. Grayson in the hope that we can bond over it and reconnect properly… but first I have some other things to work out.
I step into my room and let out a deep sigh. It really has been left as a shrine to the person I was before I left, hasn’t it? All my teenage stuff is here, and I’ve just left it as is because I haven’t been bothered enough to change it.
I wasn’t thinking that I’d be here this long.
But now, after really reconnecting with Lexi in a way that feels perfect to me, all I want to do is clear this all out, go through everything, and see what needs to be tossed and kept. If I’m really going to take a new step in life, then I need to leave the past behind me.
I need to start fresh, wherever that might be. If I respond to Brian Johnson, then so be it, but if I choose to follow a path closer to Wyatt’s then I don’t think I would hate that either. It could be a lot of fun. It really doesn’t feel like the same, utterly terrifying concept when I know that I have Lexi there…
Oh my God, I have so many photos in here, it’s unreal. Photos of me in high school with all my buddies, and with my brothers as well. I don’t mean to get so lost in these memories, but I can’t help myself. I laugh as I see me and the high school football team fooling around and pranking one another. I spot Grayson on his guitar, me obviously singing along badly to whatever he was playing. Me and Wyatt at a very young age on one of our camping trips. Those were always so much fun.
And Luke too, but he was practically a baby then.
Beaufort hasn’t always been bad to me. I just got caught up in the mindset that living in a small town wouldn’t work out well for me. I always assumed I had to go bigger and better to be where I am in life. But what if that attitude led me to overlook the love of my life?
If she’s been thrown back in my path so that I can finally make things work, then Ihaveto give it a try. I owe it to Lexi and myself.
What the hell?Among the photos, my fingers curl around something else. A letter. I’ve never been particularly sentimental, it’s amazing I still have these photos saved actually, so I don’t know why I would have kept this. I don’t recognize the neat handwriting either, which pricks my curiosity. It doesn’t even look opened…
I peel the envelope apart, trying to work out which ex-girlfriend or high school fling of mine used to write me letters. I’m sure I never responded to a single one of them, which only deepens the mystery. I prepare myself for a good laugh at the silliness of the past, checking the name at the bottom of the letter first, so I can work out who it is.
“Huh?” I mutter aloud as I let the word soak in. “Lexi, what the hell?”
I left the day after we hooked up. There wouldn’t have been any point in sending me a letter first. Maybe it came beforehand, during the time she had a crush on me. If so, this might be a really sweet memento for us to reminisce over. As long as she forgives me for not opening it in the first place. But surely, she can’t blame high school me for anything. I was an idiot back then. I didn’t think anything through, much less read letters.
To Josh, I know you’re in London now, so this will come as a surprise…
