He took a deep breath and released it before answering. “For the last two nights at least, strands of light come up from the ground and wrap around you like a cocoon.”
“You can’t be serious.”
“Why would I lie?”
Selene was silent as she stared at him. He could tell she was trying to work out if he was lying or not. But why would he lie? He had nothing to gain from telling her about the lights. It was only a benefit to her.
“Do you know what it is?” she finally asked.
“I’m sorry, I don’t. I’ve never seen anything like it before,” he admitted. “Up until last night, I didn’t even know anything like that was possible.”
“So, you don’t know any other creatures it happens to?”
“As far as I’m aware, you are the first.”
Selene was silent again, but this time she stared off into space.
After a couple of minutes, she turned to him and said, “Yeah, but the first of what? That’s the question.”
“You said your mother was definitely Human,” he reminded her. “Do you know what your father was?”
“I never met him.” She shrugged a shoulder. “But yes, he was Human.”
“Are you sure?”
“Are you calling my mother a liar?” she said defensively.
“No, I’m not,” he said calmly. “I’m just trying to get to figure it out. Is it possible she might have kept something like that from you? Maybe if she thought it was to protect you?”
“No,” she said adamantly. “She wouldn’t keep something like that from me, ever.”
But she was lying. He could see it on her face. Selene’s mother might have been Human, but there was no doubt in Arun’s mind that her father wasn’t, and Selene knew it as well.
“Well, if your mother was Human, and your father was Human,” he said. “Then where did your magic come from?”
“As I told you,” she snapped. “Some Humans have magic.”
“And as I told you, it’s nothing like what you can wield,” he countered.
Arun wasn’t getting anywhere. She was stubborn and secretive, she had an attitude that could rival any male, and she was temperamental as hell, but none of that would put him off from getting to know her. In fact, it made him all the more intrigued about her.
Selene jumped to her feet and dusted off her clothes. “You ready to go, handsome?”
“You should have breakfast first,” he told her.
“I’ll tell you what,” she said. “You have breakfast, and when you’re done, you can catch up with me. Because apparently, we need to get there today.”

Selene stretched her muscles while she waited for him, which was extremely distracting. Especially when she bent over in front of him, giving him a perfect view of her shapely arse.

Arun was holding on by a piece of thread. If she did much more stretching in front of him, he was going to lose what little self-control he had left.
