Chapter 12
Arun knew he was asking a lot of her. It wasn’t going to be an easy journey by any means, but it was a necessary journey.
If he stood any chance of helping her, he needed to know what she was doing, and soon. Preferablybeforethe first attack came.
Arun didn’t think there would be an attack that night, but he wasn’t willing to risk it, so he kept watch throughout the night just in case. After all, it was better to be safe than sorry.
Selene slept fitfully throughout the night, but he couldn’t blame her. The cold, hard ground wasn’t exactly great for getting a decent night’s sleep. She needed to rest, though, because they had a long journey ahead of them.
If they wanted to reach the cabin before nightfall… which he did… then they definitely had a long day ahead of them.
Arun had planned to let her sleep as long as possible, but as soon as the sun began to rise, she began to stir. Her eyes fluttered open as she yawned and stretched her body.
When she rolled onto her side, she noticed him watching her.
“Did you get any sleep at all last night?” she asked before covering her mouth on another yawn.
“No, I was keeping watch,” he told her.
She frowned. “All night?”
“Yes.”
“That must have been boring.”
“It wasn’t too bad,” he said.
What Arun didn’t tell her was that he’d spent most of the night just watching her sleep. He didn’t think she would appreciate that bit of information.
The strands of rainbow lights from the previous night had encased her again while she slept. Arun was mesmerised by the twirling, swirling lights. He wanted to know where it came from and what it was doing.
Was it some kind of protective barrier? Was it keeping her warm? Was it healing her? Did she even know about it?
Arun had so many questions he wanted to ask her about the light, but he didn’t know how to bring it up. It wasn’t as simple as just asking her. If she didn’t know about it, he would be the person to break it to her. Which meant he couldn’t just come straight out and ask her.
“What is it with you and watching me sleep?”
Arun raised an eyebrow as he stared at her. “What makes you think I was watching you and not keeping an eye out for danger?”
Selene rolled her eyes. “Because you’ve got that same weird look on your face as you had yesterday when I woke up. So, spill, what’s with it?”
He racked his brain, trying to come up with a way to bring up the subject, but his mind went blank. There was only one way to find out if she knew or not, and that was by just asking her straight out.
Selene sat up and glared at him. “Well? Are you going to tell me or what?”
Arun sighed deeply. “Do you know what happens to you when you fall asleep?”
“Yes, I drift off into a magical dream world. Then when I wake up, I have a weirdo staring at me and asking weird arse questions,” she said sarcastically.
“I’m being serious,” he told her.
“So am I,” she countered.
“So, you don’t know about the light?”
She frowned. “What light?”
Was she playing dumb? Or did she honestly not know about it? From the look on her face, Arun was leaning more towards the latter.
