Hell, even I know I don’t sound convincing.
“Don’t tell him I stopped by. I think he’ll be pissed, and I really enjoy working here.”
“If he asks, I will not lie.”
“Fair enough.”
Katie steps into the elevator, going down first. As the doors close, the elevator going up opens and I step in.
Jenna seesme approaching her desk and smiles at me.
“He said to let you right in.”
“Great.” My face is hurting with all the fake smiles. I close the door and sit on the couch in his office.
He looks up from his computer and smiles when he sees me.
“I was going to stop by your office, but you looked busy.”
“Yeah, I was looking at some changes for the hotel. It needed my complete attention.”
“Well. I’m happy you're here now.”
“How was your meeting?”
“It went well. Everything is on track for launch day.”
“I thought I saw Katie there.”
I see him tense up. I know that this meeting is going to go one of two ways at this moment. He’s either going to tell me the truth or I’m going to blow. Please don’t lie to me, Adrien.
“Yeah, she works in the accounts department. She was the money person on this.”
“Ah, right, I thought she just worked in the building. I wasn’t aware that she worked for you?”
He tenses up on the chair in front of me again. He has some of the worst tells on the planet, and he should never play poker.
“What are you really asking me, Sara?”
I take a deep breath.
“Was she a one-night stand or did it carry on longer?”
He runs his hands through his hair. He knows he’s stuck between a rock and a hard place.
“It was a one-night thing. It happened in Miami when I was visiting Catherine and Bryan. I guess we’re finally having this conversation.”
“I wasn’t aware there was a conversation we needed to have.”
I re-cross my legs and try to get comfy.
“I only slept with her once. Then I saw she got a job in the building.”
Is he fucking serious?
“She was new in town, she moved here for a job. We had lunch a couple of times. Not forgetting, she’s Bryan’s cousin. I was free to do whatever I wanted, Sara.”
“That’s not the issue. Hell, how is it any different from the way I got the job?” I shout. I know I’ve gone from zero to a hundred in seconds, but Katie just does that to me.
