“How do you know Katie?”
I walk over to my office door and close it. I motion for Jenna to sit on the couch.
“I asked you first.”
“She works in the building.”
Of course, I already knew that, but something doesn’t sit well with me. I can’t place what the feeling is, but I know I’m missing something.
“How do you know her?” She asks. I can almost hear the panic in her voice.
“She’s Bryan’s cousin. She was one of the bridesmaids at the wedding. Of course, I also found out Adrien had slept with her.”
Jenna relaxes a little.
“Oh, thank god. So you know then. Thank god for that. She got to be a bit of a clinger. I mean, he only slept with her a couple of times, I think. After that, she got a job in the accounts department, resulting in everyone thinking she slept with him to get the job.”
Okay, that’s news to me. Catherine told me it was a one-night stand, Adrien told me it was a one-night thing, didn’t he? He sure as shit did not say she worked for AB Enterprises.
“Ok. Thanks Jenna. You're right, Adrien will probably want you up there. Can you do me a favor?”
“Anything.”
“When his meeting ends, can you let me know when he’s back in the office? I need like 10 minutes with him.”
“Of course. Why don’t I just let him know now?”
“I need the meeting to be in his office.”
“Oh, ok.”
I spent the next hour staring at my screen, accomplishing nothing. Why didn’t anyone tell me she worked here?
There’s a knock at my door, and I groan. I should have told my assistant not to let anyone disturb me. Not even Adrien.
“YEAH?” I shout. I brace myself for Adrien to pop in. I get a shock when I see Katie. I stand up from my desk and give her the fakest smile I can muster. She leaves the door and walks over to my couch, making herself at home.
Where the hell is my assistant when I need her?!
“I wanted to pop by and try to clear the air. I heard about the engagement. Congratulations.”
I shut my office door. I have no way of knowing how long I can fake this face. I can’t have half the marketing department see me lose my shit with someone who works downstairs and who everyone knows he’s slept with.
“Katie. I can’t believe it has taken this long for our paths to cross.”
“Really?” She smiles at me.
Okay, so you’ve got me there.
“Look, I know you guys are the real thing. Bryan has already given me the riot act. We were going to cross paths, eventually. I didn’t want the first time for you to be ambushed in a meeting.”
That’s actually kind of nice of her, I guess. I still don’t trust her, though.
“Thanks for stopping by.” I stand up and open the door to let her out.
I follow her to the elevator, and she keeps looking at me as if she’s worried about something.
“I have a meeting with Adrien,” I smile.
