Chapter 2

Twisted Memories Pt 2

Damian's POV

Thirteen years, my beloved mate, my Rose, it’s been thirteen long years since a rogue ripped you from me. They managed to get away, but his scent is burned into my mind, his blurry appearance haunted me every night. It angered me how I couldn’t fully remember how he looked. I remember it like it was yesterday, my love. It was a rainy day, lightning and thunder shaking the sky above. Rogues were spotted near the northern part of the territory during our pack hunt, and I left with Alexander and fighters to quickly address the situation. We had finished a pack-wide hunt. Why must they attack now I thought to myself. I shifted, my clothes ripping off me, to reveal my solid obsidian wolf form with burning fiery golden eyes.

What scars I had were barely visible through my thick pelt. Alexander, my beta, shifted by me; he was a gray wolf with scars all over his wolf form due to the countless battles he fought for this pack. Battles in which he saved me more times than I could recall. His deep electric forest green eyes met my golden eyes and we darted north with fighters following us. Hopefully, we were able to stop them before they spread through the territory. If we missed them this could result in innocent deaths.

A growl escaped my throat as we ran in a spread-out formation. We were covering the distance from the border fast, but the storm was making it difficult to get a sense of the rogues possibly nearby or how many. Their scents were masked by the pouring rain. With their tracks covered in puddles and thick mud. My thoughts drifted to Rose.

My love, stay inside the cabin with Katie. I ordered her telepathically in hopes she was not already out.

They were my world, and my pregnant mate had no business being out in harm's way. I’d lose myself if I lost them.

We are at our first home she said back as I picture her angelic voice clearly, So pure and soft.

Damnit, she’s out with Katie and stuck in the storm since it wouldn’t be best for her to carry our daughter to the main cabin. My paws crashed into the wet muddy terrain below as we pushed forward a few minutes from the rogue's sightings by patrol. Water soaking my whole body and I was a muddy mess as were my wolves.

Reaching the clearing we see, ten rogue wolves. They all shifted by the time we clashed with them. Growls and screams of pain filled the air. The battle was on as teeth clashed against skin and blood was sent flying. Snarls filled the air as I noticed a slender saddle brown wolf closing in on Alexander. I rushed the wolf before Alexander could turn around and slammed it to the ground in a tackle. While pinned under me, it kicked and clawed trying to get me off, yet I was stronger. Ignoring the brief clawing on my abdomen I reached for its neck.

I snapped its neck in my mouth quickly, warm blood pooled on my tongue, and I thrashed its body side to side. I discarded the lifeless wolf by throwing it towards a tree nearby. Alexander was chasing after a rogue that was attempting to retreat. Was this it? Did we get them all before we lost anyone on our side?

That's when I felt it, my whole world came crashing down and my eyes filled with tears.

Damian, I’m sorry, know I’ll always love you. It was Rose calling for me.

I froze thinking about how they got around us and took off screaming her name in a howl. It didn’t make sense, how did one slip through? Alexander was on my heels and calling for pack members to get to the cabin. Why must she have gone to the furthest cabin in our pack’s community? I picked up my pace running as fast as my exhausted body would carry me. Please no, I can't lose my family. Please don't take my pregnant mate and daughter. Tears were flowing from my burning eyes soaking my fur as we raced to the cabin. I must make it. Please let me make it. I couldn’t live without Rose; she was my meaning in life.

After what seemed like forever, we reached the cabin. A rogue darted out of the cabin like a bullet leaving the door swinging behind him.His scent seemed familiar yet new at the same time and the darkness from the storm combined with the distance made it practically impossible for me to get a good look at him. The rain had stopped so there was no doubt in my mind that he smelt us coming.

"Rose!" I screamed but there was no answer.

My heart sank as I raced to the cabin the scent of fresh blood filled the air. A scent burned into my memory as I felt my heart shatter into a million pieces. Alexander chased after the rogue that was already half a football field ahead of him. I shifted my teary-eyed gaze back to the cabin and rushed in growling in case there were more rogues. What I saw before me looked like a scene out of a horror movie. There was blood painting the walls and I saw Rose's motionless body lying there.

I saw Katie under her hiding in her dead mother’s arms as if she crawled there to hide.Katie's eyes were wide open, and she was crying. My daughter lay under her mother’s body in complete shock at what took place.

"Mommy-mommy please get up." Katie cried out for her mother and my heart shattered.

Rose was gone. The love of my life laid dead before my eyes due to some scum rogue who had an issue with me. I knew I was hated, but Rose? She had no enemies. Her light curly blond hair was soaked in blood, her pale body was so cold as I nudged her. Tears filled my eyes as I blamed myself for everything. Her stomach was ripped open, her throat was ripped out. I lost my love and my son on the same night. They will pay for what they have done. I looked over at Katie and grabbed her with my mouth. I knew I would be faster staying in wolf form than shifting. She screamed the most bone-chilling cries for her mother. I rushed out of the cabin and ran towards the main cabin. Alexander was running back to me, and I stopped.

The pack was outside of my cabin, every wolf staring at me as I put Katie on the ground. They heard my howls for Rose and went to our current home. Damnit, if only they went to the other cabin maybe they could have saved her. I collapsed crying and shifted back screaming at the top of my lungs. Cursing the world and everyone in it. The pack stood there motionless as they watched their alpha fall apart and they knew their beloved luna was gone. From this day on I knew kindness would be my weakness.

"Alpha, the rogue got away. He managed to get into another pack’s territory. I sent word to them, but I'm uncertain if he has been caught," Alexander said to me.

His normally strong voice was shaky, he was trying to catch his breath, but most of all he was trying to hide his tears as he lifted Katie into his arms. He hugged her face against his chest. Until he grabbed her, I didn’t realize he had shifted back to his human form. He knew Rose was gone and was scared at how I would take the news.

"I want that rogue hunted down and brought back to me so I can dismember him myself!" I yelled to the whole pack. My blood was boiling and the only thing that would stop it is hearing that rogue scream as I tortured him slowly. I wanted his pain to last. They looked at me with a mix of sadness and fear as I was growling. My fist balled so tight that my hands were bleeding. Derrick stood there with supplies in his arms, he must have been hoping I made it in time, the medical supplies fell to the ground with a crashing sound. He cared so much about Rose, enough to make me jealous of their friendship.

Lightning crashed to the ground, and I snapped awake from my nightmare of my mate’s death. Her death and that rogue’s scent had tortured me for thirteen painful years. I couldn’t remember the last time I got any sleep. Not even Ambien could save me at night. I can't believe thirteen years have passed. I celebrated my thirty-sixth birthday alone with nothing but memories of the love of my life. Alexander walked in from talking to the pack in my absence. This day has never been easy for me even after all these years and I refuse to take another as my mate. I know packs think I need to move on, but I never will, I don’t care if they have females open to me. I longed for Rose and only Rose.

Behind Alexander trailed Alice, a smile spread across her face. She was an odd one. Always trying to come onto me and I hated it. She didn’t understand the love I felt and still feel for Rose. I wanted to be left alone.

"Alice, go get my daughter" I ordered with a low growl. The sight of her made me sick. I wanted that wolf nowhere near me and the fear showed in her eyes, she knew that. If I had it my way, I would have exiled her a long time ago, damn cunt. She needs to respect the fact I will keep rejecting her.

"Alexander, inform the hunters I think a night hunt in a storm is needed." I finished talking to him. I knew he wouldn’t like this idea, but I didn’t care. Maybe if I was out in this storm and feeling the weather on me, I could finally relax. After a pause, I look at Alexander, my closest friend deep in thought telepathically informing the hunters.

"Alexander you're thirty and have been without a mate or even showing a love interest. Are you sure there isn't anyone?" I question him and he shifts about nervously, suddenly my lovely Katie walks in.
