Chapter 1
Twisted Memories Pt 1
Katie's POV
It was four in the afternoon, the sun was gone, and sadness filled the air as a raging storm brewed. Thirteen years ago on this day my mother was tragically slaughtered right before my eyes. My father was away and couldn't make it in time to save us. He has hated himself ever since and refuses to let me, his only child and heir to the Dark Silence Pack, out of his or his beta's sight. We are one of the largest and most well-known feared packs in the United States and yet rogues managed to take out my mother, the alpha's mate. It sent a shockwave through the packs of the United States when news of her death had spread.
The rogues from that dreadful night perished but not before completing their goal, keeping my father away. I was only five years old when she was slaughtered protecting me. All I remember is blood everywhere and a large obsidian wolf with blazing golden eyes rushing in and taking me. My father in his wolf form raced in and took me far away from my mother's lifeless body, tears running down his face, then everything went black. That was my last memory of her, and it left a void in my heart.
I snapped back to the present by the crack of lightning crashing to the ground. I loved a good storm. It was calming to me oddly despite the memories it sometimes brings. The sky was black with stains of dark gray clouds, the trees outside were rocking heavily, and the rain was pouring so hard you could barely see out the mansion's windows. It was a rough storm and seemed to only be growing worse and worse by the minute.
A knock on my door drew my attention from the storm. The bedroom door was white with black and crimson designs, our pack colors, and it swung wide open to reveal Alice, a slender woman with short blazing red hair and bright jade green eyes. Her arms had scars on them from battles over the years, and her body was stained with freckles. She was wearing a crimson red lace crop top with a black bra and short shorts that were black. She always dressed extremely revealing; however, she was the most innocent female in the pack aside from me sexually. A complete virgin yet she knew how to show off her body to make people drool over her.
"Your father has requested you in his office, ma'am." She spoke coldly to me with her thick Boston accent.
She wasn't from these parts but entered our pack one month after my mother was killed, and it seemed like odd timing. She's tried getting close to my father, but he lashes out at anyone who isn't his me or his beta, Alexander. Alexander is my father's best friend and the only one able to calm him down.
"Thank you, Alice, I'll be on my way." I spoke, my southern accent was thick like most of the pack, but my voice was soft and relaxed; I rarely had a firm tone, making me appear weak, but I was far from that. I sound like my mother, the older pack members, and my father tell me. While emotional may be a way to describe me, I was decently strong and could hold my own as needed. My father made sure I went through rigorous training after my mother was killed.
I had numerous early mornings learning the importance of hand-to-hand combat with Alexander and Mason. I was finally able to make Mason tap out before my father ordered me to also study the medical aspect of things. A warrior who couldn’t perform even the most basic of aid was worthless in battle. Derrick took over late at night helping me advance my studies on the medical side, maybe one day I could be as great as him.
As Alice closed the door, I took my black plush blanket off and walked to my closet. It’s a large walk-in with crimson and black floral designs all over it, roses, vines, and thorns, like the rest of my room. My father had all the walls painted like this when I was little, and I never bothered changing it because he said my mother would have wanted this. He had this entire mansion built a couple of years after her death. It was one of the only things I had from her to hold onto, a home. I grabbed a white shirt with an open back that had strings of fabric connecting across the opening and a pair of black leggings with crimson red tennis shoes.
I hurried out of my room not even bothering to close my door all the way. It isn't normal that my father needs me, and he knows I do have duties of my own. I walked down the long hallways, they are white with accents of black and crimson red on the trim and décor. A mansion full of the pack colors, he always wanted to show off the pack’s colors to anyone who may visit this mansion, or maybe my mother always wanted to.
I reached his office, the only room with black doors and golden accents. His office and bedroom were designed to stand out from the rest of the mansion so that you wouldn't mistake them. While some may think this is risky, he didn’t care. To the left of his door stood Maxwell, one of the pack's top fighters, he was a rough-looking guy. Maxwell had long shaggy white hair that almost completely covered his deep almond brown eyes, and a single scar from his left eyebrow to the middle of his cheek. Maxwell’s clothes looked to be a few sizes too small, even the slightest movement and his muscles would rip the seams. He had a five-o'clock shadow as he didn’t want a beard nor to be clean-shaven. His arms were covered in full sleeves of tattoos, mostly plague doctor and warrior related. He was lucky when he got that scar that he didn't lose his eyesight.
Then to the right was Charlie, a lean guy who looked so friendly and welcoming compared to Maxwell. Charlie had black hair cut military style and his skin was an eye-catching dark umber with some muscle tone. He had no tattoos which I wasn’t sure if he was against them by how he seemed to always judge Maxwell or not. Charlie was being trained by Maxwell and was trusted with protecting my father at all costs.
I rejected the idea of having guards inside the pack mansion where I'm safe from danger. It would be suicide for someone to try and attack me inside here. However, I always have Alexander with me when I’m outside. My father wanted no one else but his beta by my side. I didn’t mind that honestly because I was decently close to Alexander and trusted him fully. He was my knight in shining armor. They moved to the side allowing me to enter.
"Katie, I summoned you here because we will be going on a night hunt and should return tomorrow morning. You will be in charge while I'm gone." His voice was deep and threatening.
My father spoke to me in the same tone he would anyone else that was under him and never in a caring tone; he had been this way ever since I was little and a part of me thought it was because of how much I resembled the one thing he lost that hurt him the most, my mother. He had this darkness to him since that day, a darkness I hated but he seemed to hold onto. His golden eyes fixated on me as I came to his side. They looked like a fire was dancing in him. He was wearing a black button-up silk dress shirt and black cotton dress pants.
His tie, a deep crimson, was loose around his neck as if he was in the middle of removing it. He had jet black hair that was kept slightly longer than a military cut, and his golden eyes had a broken look to them any time he even glanced at me. It was as if my being here warranted some type of resentment from him.
“If anything extreme happens in my absence, simply call for me.” Now my father wouldn’t even look at me.
That's when I realized this night hunt was for him to get out and have time away from most of the pack. He was still hurting even after all this time after my mother’s death. My heart breaks for my father, he has lost so much and never truly was able to move on. I reached out for him, yet he moved away as a tear escaped his demonic look. He was terrifying even to me, but I know my father has a side to him that the pack rarely sees since mom died.
A side of him that I never get to see because of my mom. It hurt me knowing that he was this way instead of his happy self. Trauma can do that to a person I said to myself. Trauma was something we knew all too well if you ask me.
“Very well father, please be safe.” It didn’t matter how much he may resent me I always wanted him to know I am still here for him.
