‘’True as ever’’ he confirmed ‘’with the rich rise in stock you own, liquidatable land and property assets, high interest percent on bank savings, along with of course global earnings from Tazer, you my friend have finally reached billionaire status! This is huge Hudson, REALLY HUGE’’
It was. I knew it was. Becoming a billionaire was that gold milestone I’d strived a very long time in my career to get to…but what was it all without her?
‘’Are you okay? You don’t sound nearly as happy as a man would who just learned he’d become a billionaire’’ said Frank on the other end of the line.
‘’Oh no I am, believe me, I am. It’s just…’’ and my voice trailed off when noticing a familiar diamond bracelet sitting neatly across the bar countertop.
‘’Frank I…I gotta go’’ I said, and closed the phone making my way over to the kitchen.
Her diamond bracelet, her apartment key, her new Apple iPhone, and a folded-up note each sat neatly side by side of each other on the countertop. With gritted teeth I flipped the phone face down not ever wanting to see that piece of shit article again, which from the screens display was confirmation Taylor had indeed seen and read it. Next, I delicately picked up the diamond bracelet and traced my fingers across the precious stones…I could feel her as I touched it, and the pain that followed burned like hellfire at my fingers. With a heavy sigh of despair, I placed the bracelet securely inside my suit pocket, ready to return it to my love when I found her again.
Next was the folded-up note, and I took a long deep breath before slowly unfolding it to read…
‘’You were the one person I trusted in this world, and you betrayed that trust. I’m sorry Hudson, but I can’t forgive this.
Goodbye, Taylor.’’
My entire world crashed like a fallen kingdom around me. I’d lost the only person I too placed all my trust in. I’d betrayed us both.
I folded back the note and placed it into my pocket alongside the bracelet, before numbly making my way over to my drinks cabinet, where I poured myself a triple glass of Bourbon whiskey. It was gone in three seconds or less, and I instantly poured myself up another, paying no never mind to the way it burned like acid down the inside of my throat. With that shot gone too, a blast of hurt rage nuked through my body, and I turned and threw the glass at bullet speed against the wall, smashing it to smithereens before falling to my knees and crying in my hands at the mess I’d made of everything.
What do I do now?
Where was she?
How could I make all this right?
I had broken Taylor’s heart, I could feel it, because it exactly mirrored my own. I naturally wanted all traces of the article removed so neither of us, but in particular my sweetheart, never had to see it again.
To have it taken down everywhere on the app was one thing, but in today’s world as the saying goes: once it’s out there, it’s out there. And I had no doubt a zillion screenshots had already been taken of the article and saved to peoples personal devices. And while cleverly written in a way to both embarrass and imply me as a lovesick sugar daddy, I was thick-skinned enough to handle whatever bullshit the tabloids was fed about me, even if by design it saw me falsely slandered on my own app. But Taylor, my poor beautiful angel who’d already gone through so much in life, none of this was at all fair to her.
‘’Ugh, the downright fucking irony of it all!’’ I roared from the chaos exploding my head right now. It’s as if sometimes I can never win, a classic case of: if you don’t read the news you’re uninformed, and if you do, you’re damn well misinformed. I desperately wanted to set the record straight, and even if I did pull every string in my power to have it completely removed from the net, how would that reflect back on my company as a whole?
I can just see the new headline now: Owner of Tazer manipulates rules when the news is suddenly about him…
It killed me, it fucking killed me…but I couldn’t do it. I wouldn’t do it. If I did, it would make a mockery of all Tazer stood firm for.
The article had to stay. But I be damned if I lose the love of my life because of it.
I had to find her…
CHAPTER 49
I of course knew who had leaked the story. And the cataclysmic rage building inside me as I approached the Charleton Luxury Apartment Buildings where Skipp lived, was sure to reign hell on earth in a way not even the devil himself could prepare for.
And after spending the last seven hours driving frantically about town trying to find her, calling on the way every shelter in the phonebook I could find, it unfortunately was all to no avail.
I knew she had no money to survive, as I’d not long after also discovered her credit card, car keys, and a few other small personal items she’d accumulated while being here, all inside her purse by the couch. All her clothing was still at the suite too, her shoes, her toiletries, everything. The only things not present were the small bag of clothing she’d worn when first arriving, in her refusal I guess to dispose of her war armor which kept her strong for so many years. Also her re-issued birth certificates, driver’s licence, and SSN card.
She literally came and left with the clothes on her back, and it broke my heart severely that she took nothing with her to remind herself of me.
Had I really broken her heart that bad? Or was her affection for me misjudged in a cruel but ironic heartache of history repeating itself? The answer was I had broken her heart. I had broken the promise I made to keep her story secret between us, and only us. Instead, I’d been a fool and innocently shared her story with someone whom I thought was a lifelong friend.
Skipp was the devil, an evil predatory wolf, a manufactured reptilian, and every other villainous being you could think of rolled into one. Well, I was ready to put a stop to his poisonous ways once and for all!
Knock, knock… knoc kock…
When no one answered, I quietly turned the lock and stepped inside…
