“You know exactly why,” he says, slapping my arse. I yelp and turn to face him as he slides his hand into the back pocket of his trousers and retrieves his wallet. “Here. Take my card.”

“What for?”

“To pay for the food.”

“I don’t need your money; I have a job.”

“You’ve been cooking for us for weeks, it’s only fair I pay for the ingredients.”

“Put your card away,” I say, pushing his hand down.

“Take it,” he growls.

“On second thoughts, there’s this cute little boutique that just opened up.” I’m grinning as I pluck it out of his fingers.

I’m joking of course, but I like teasing him. “Do they sell sexy stripper clothes there?”

“Why?” I ask, narrowing my eyes.

“You’re going to need something scandalous to wear when I get my private performance.”

“I wasn’t planning on wearing clothes,” I say, winking and sliding his credit card into the top pocket of his suit jacket.

“You wench.”

“Brooke pays me well, and I have no other expenses. I don’t pay rent, and I also have an unlimited credit card that my dad gave me.”

“Your dad?” I hear, and when I spin around, I see Blake’s wide eyes looking up at me. “The mean one?”

“No, sweetie,” I answer, bending down to his height. “The mean one is in jail; I’m talking about my new one.”

“You have a new one?”

“Yes, and he’s really nice.”

“Can I meet him?”

Of course, Connor let the cat out of the bag with our parents, and now my mum is bugging me to meet Mason and Blake, but I’m not sure if I’m ready for that step yet. I have no clue what the ‘meet the parents’ protocol is, but I’m thinking it’s a little soon for that.

“He lives in Melbourne with my mum.”

“Will I get a new nice mum one day, Jazzie?”

“Maybe. Any mum would be lucky to have you as their little boy.”

I straighten his tie and kiss his cheek before I stand. As I walk towards the fridge to grab their lunches, I notice Mason giving me a strange look. It’s not one I’ve seen before, so it’s impossible to decipher what it means.

By the time I pack Blake’s lunch into his bag, and hand Mason his, he’s still got the same weird look on his face. “What?” I ask, frowning.

“You.”

“Me what?”

“It’s going to be you, Red,” is all he says as he turns and exits the kitchen, leaving me standing there with my mouth gaping open.

Was he implying that I’m going to be Blake’s nice new mum?
