“We’ve gotta call it.”

“One more,” Prescott blurted.

All eyes whipped toward him.

“You can’t be in here,” said an attendant.

“One more,” Prescott bit out. “She has a young son. Do. One. More.”

After a nod from the physician, the attendant placed the pads on Sally’s chest. After several seconds, he said, “Clear.”

“Come on, come on,” Prescott ground out.

Nothing.

Silence fell over the group.

Prescott’s heart shattered into a million pieces as a nurse pulled the sheet over Sally’s exposed chest.

The doctor stepped forward. “I’m so sorry. We couldn’t bring her back.”

Forcing down the loss, Prescott asked, “What happened? I thought the gunshot wound wasn’t fatal.”

“We’ll need an autopsy to know for sure, but sometimes a blood clot can form during surgery. Did your—”

“Sister,” Prescott replied.

“Did your sister smoke? Was she on the pill?”

“I never saw her smoke and I have no idea about her birth control. How can I get the results of her autopsy?”

“A nurse can take your contact info at the station,” said the doctor. “Why don’t you come with me—”

“I’d like a minute with her,” Prescott said.

As the medical personnel began to clear away, he added, “Thank you for doing everything you could.”

They expressed their condolences as they filed out.

Alone with a sister he’d only known for a few months, Prescott dragged a chair over and held her hand.

Dropping his head, he sat there in silence. Minutes passed. Then, the anger took hold. Some career criminal had gunned down an innocent woman. As he raised his head and let his gaze fall upon Sally’s lifeless face, he vowed to avenge her.

“I will find the monster who did this to you. There will be no sanctuary for him. There will be no place he can hide that I won’t find him. I won’t rest until I’ve ended his life and watched him take his last fucking breath.”

He set her lifeless hand on the mattress and pushed out of the chair. His heart ached, his soul burned with unspeakable rage.

How the hell was he going to tell Ethan that his mom was gone… and never, ever coming back?

Jacqueline

Jacqueline boarded the unmarked,twelve-passenger jet. In addition to the two Secret Service agents who’d escorted her to the airport, two more waited in the plane.

Her head was spinning. Why do I need this much protection?

She had no idea what elite group Z was referring to. She had no idea what they did or for whom.
