Prescott sent Cooper a text. “I need Danielle’s hacker help. If she’s got time, have her text me.”
Prescott’s phone binged with a new email alert. “There’s a DNA match for Sally’s baby.” As he read the email, the color in his face drained. “No fucking way.”
“What?” she asked.
“The father of Sally’s baby is Terrence Maul.”
“What? That can’t be right.”
“Ninety-nine percent accuracy. It sure as fuck is.”
“Ohmygod,” Jacqueline blurted. “Maul is Mr. Man, the one who terrorized Ethan.” Her frustration morphed into full-blown anger. “I hate him even more, if that’s possible.”
The anger rolling off him was palpable. The ALPHA Killer case had become personal for Prescott. Maul had escaped, met Sally, used her to help him stay hidden, then killed her when he learned she was carrying his child.
Jacqueline clicked on an open browser with Maul’s mug shot. “I’ve had this page open for days. I’m grateful Ethan didn’t see it.”
“He’s an escaped fugitive,” Prescott bit out. “There’s no way he looked like himself when he cozied up to my sister.”
“He must be a real smooth talker. Sally actually loved that monster.”
Prescott growled. “Now, we know who killed her.”
“She moved up here for him.”
“Or he lured her here, so he could kill her. I cannot fucking wait to take him out.”
“Yeah, well, I gotta find him first.” After a brief pause, she added, “Do you think Maul is the Campus Killer? I know I said that guns travel—and they do—but…”
“If he is, it’s even more reason to take him out.”
THE EVENING OF HAWK AND ADDISON’srehearsal dinner, Jaqueline found Prescott and Ethan playing a game in the family room.
“Wow, look how beautiful Jack looks,” Prescott said as she made her way over to them.
As she modeled the black, halter-top dress, Prescott started clapping, so Ethan mimicked him.
“Thank you.” Then, she realized the guys were dressed alike in black shirts and black pants. “You both look so handsome. Let me put Loki in the laundry room and we can head out.”
Prescott pushed off the floor. “Hawk said Loki can stay in the farmhouse since we’ll be in the barn all evening. We’ll put him in a bedroom upstairs.”
“Thank you.” She dropped a light kiss on his lips before addressing Ethan. “Are you excited to be in Uncle Hawk and Aunt Addison’s wedding tomorrow?”
“Uh-huh,” he replied. “Uncle Prescott said I get to walk down the aisle and carry rings. It’s a very important job.”
“Very important,” Jacqueline agreed.
Prescott collected his sport coat off the sofa along with a jacket for Ethan. With a shawl and her clutch in hand, she grabbed Loki’s leash and a small bag of his toys.
After everyone piled into the SUV, they took off toward Hawk and Addison’s farmhouse.
Two armed guards were waiting when they pulled up to the private driveway. Prescott unrolled his window.
“Prescott Armstrong, Jacqueline Hartley, and Ethan Sagall.”
One guard checked the list, while the second stood, a weapon in his hand, his arm by his side.
“You’re clear to enter. Enjoy your evening.”
