I KNOW YOU TOO
Prescott
“What’s my sister doing with your uncle?” Jack murmured.
“Can you put me down, pleeease?” Ethan asked.
“Not yet, buddy. I see my uncle over there. Let’s go say hi.” He clasped Jack’s hand. “This’ll be interesting.”
Because the furniture was tightly packed in the showroom, Jack let go of his hand. He didn’t like that she was behind him because he didn’t have eyes on her, so he pulled over. “You gotta go first.”
“Am I your shield?”
He chuckled. “I need eyes on you.”
Her gaze softened, she leaned up, kissed his cheek. “Thank you.”
Ethan giggled.
She gave Ethan’s shoulder a gentle caress before continuing through the maze of furniture, Prescott close on her heels.
Artemis and Jacqueline’s sister were staring at an office furniture set, tucked in the corner. When Artemis glanced at them, his jaw became slack, his eyes grew large. He looked like he’d seen the devil himself.
“Hey, look who’s here!” Artemis bellowed, his attention jumping to Ethan and Jacqueline. His eyebrows pinched together, before he gestured to the blonde. “You remember Leslie.”
Leslie turned around and recoiled when her gaze met Jack’s
That’s the woman Artemis hired from TopCon.
“Whoa,” Leslie uttered. “What are you doing here?”
Jacqueline glared at her. “I swung by your house for my money, but you stiffed me.”
Leslie barked out a laugh. “Relax. I just need your account number and that other number. Geez, don’t pitch a fit.” She flicked her gaze to Prescott, arched her back, and pasted on a big smile. “Hi, there, handsome. I remember you.”
“What are you doing here?” Prescott asked his uncle.
“Window shopping,” Artemis replied. “How ‘bout you?”
“I’m buying Ethan bedroom furniture,” Prescott said.
“Ethan?”
“My nephew. Sally’s son.”
“Whatever happened with that?” Artemis asked. “Did she get offered the job—”
“Hey, Ethan,” Jack blurted. “Why don’t we go check out the big boy furniture?”
Prescott waited until she’d taken Ethan out of earshot.
“Sally was murdered,” Prescott said.
Artemis gasped. “Oh, how tragic. What happened?”
“She was shot,” he said. “And now, Ethan has no family.”
