“Hey, how come you haven’t followed me on social media?”
“I’m never on it.”
“Well, just do it.” Leslie hung up.
“What has happened to my sister?” Jacqueline muttered.
“Everything okay?” Prescott asked.
“Yeah,” she replied.
“How many siblings do you have?” Prescott asked.
“Two. An older brother and sister.”
“Are you tight with them?” He sipped his coffee.
“I’m close with Keith, closer with his wife, Naomi. Leslie and I used to be, but she’s changed a lot since I’ve been gone.”
“How?”
“She’s become super obsessed with her looks and her Instagram modeling career. She’s had a few plastic surgeries. You should come with me. If you’re into humongous boobs, you’ll love her.”
“I loveyourboobs, and Iamcoming with you.”
“Right.” She sipped her coffee, pushed out of the chair. “This is cold. Can I heat yours?”
He handed her his mug. After heating both, she started working.
“I’m checking all the cases where Gloria and Bert testified against anyone they arrested while working at ALPHA.”
Three hours later, she’d narrowed down the field from eighteen suspects to seven. “Terrence Maul came up again,” she said. “What’s his story?”
“He was in ALPHA—”
“You took out a former Operative?”
“Yeah,” he replied. “Several years ago, he went on a mission with Bert and Gloria. From what I read about the case, they were supposed to take out six specific men and arrest anyone else in the house. He went crazy and killedeveryone, including the women and children.”
“Ohgod.”
“It was a massacre. He got arrested. Bert and Gloria testified against him and he went to prison. He escaped last year and went missing for months until he surfaced in Fredericksburg. I was brought in to take him out.”
“Which you did.”
“I shot him, he fell into the river, but he hasn’t washed up on shore yet.”
“Gloria and Bert are dead, so Mauldefinitelygoes back in the mix.”
“You’re wasting your time. He’s dead.” Prescott’s phone vibrated with an incoming call. He answered on speaker, “Hey, Dad.”
“Hey, Scotty. Ethan’s been asking for you. What’s your plan for picking him up?”
It was a little after noon. “We’re swinging by around one. Everything okay?”
“He mentioned that his mommy didn’t come back and he needs confirmation you are.”
“Put him on.”
