Prescott couldn’t jump that far ahead. His current project—soccer for toddlers—was as far into the future as he could go.

“You there?” Z asked.

“I’m here,” Prescott replied, returning to the present.

“Until we get DNA confirmation, watch your six.”

“Always do,” Prescott replied. “As far as I’m concerned, I eliminated my target.”

“I’ll let you know when the results come back.”

“What else?”

“There was an assassination attempt on Luther Warschak.”

“Fuck,” Prescott bit out. “Is he okay?”

“He wasn’t hit, but he was shaken up pretty good.”

Years earlier, Luther and Z had started ALPHA. Though Z continued to pluck certain Ops for his own projects, Luther passed the reins of the top-secret organization to Dakota and Providence. When Dakota moved on to BLACK OPS, Cooper Grant stepped up to run ALPHA with Providence.

“Specs?” Prescott asked.

“Luther was getting into his car after a tennis game at his club. This was more of a sniper attempt, like with Addison and Nicholas.”

“Any surveillance?”

“Only of Luther ducking into his car as a bullet pierced his ALPHA SUV.”

“I’ll see if there’s video of the shooter.” Prescott watched Ethan knock down his tower and start laughing. “Where’s Luther now?”

“Secret Service escorted him and his wife out of town in the middle of the night, and I’m about to board a plane myself.”

“Are you leaving the country?” Prescott asked.

“I’m going to Bali, or as Addison says, ‘Bali baby!’” He chuckled. “But it’s no vacation. I’ll be working and surrounded by too much security. What progress have you and Jacqueline made?”

“It’s slower than we’d like.”

“I uploaded the video of the assassination attempt on Luther. Review it with her.”

“Speaking of Jacqueline—you had her escorted back here by four Secret Service agents. Why so many?”

“Two escorted her,” Z explained. “Two needed to fly back, so they tagged along. Why?”

“Addison gave her permission to stay in your condo, and I’m concerned it’s not secure enough.”

“It’s plenty safe,” Z pushed back.

“Well, Nicky impersonated you to get her into the building. The guard gave her access no problem.”

“Hmm, okay, thatisa concern. What are you thinking?”

“She can move in here. She’d have plenty of privacy, plus I’ve got a shit-ton of security.”

“That’s up to her,” Z said. “I can’t enforce where she lives.”

“What if I told you she’s getting a puppy?”
