After dressing in a navy-blue pantsuit with a white blouse, she pulled on the auburn wig, grabbed her Glock and her bag. With her heels in hand, she trotted down the stairs. He was standing on his balcony, in shades, staring out at the water.

When she stepped outside, he faced her. “Look how pretty you are.”

She smiled. “You like the wig?”

“I likeyourhair, but you look great.”

She ran her hand down his back. “You can tell me anything, okay?”

“I know, babe. Ready to head out?”

Despite her protests, she couldn’t ride shotgun. She’d been relegated to the back seat.

As he backed out of his garage, she said, “This is ridiculous. It’s like you’re my chauffer.”

“If you like the way I drive, you can always tip merealgood.”

She laughed.

Once on the main road, he said, “No one can know you might be a target for a terror plot, so we’ve gotta come up with a reason why I’m driving you around.”

“We’re such good friends. I don’t think anyone will notice. You haven’t brought up what’s going on with your company.”

“Talking about it only pisses me off.”

“Gotcha. I’m here if you need an ear or a second opinion.”

“I fired an employee and he’s trying to fuck with me,” Hawk said. “I’ve gotta do some damage control and put my system on lockdown until I confirm it’s him.”

Hawk pulled into ALPHA HQ, drove around back, and parked. They went inside and found Cooper working at his small conference table in his office.

“Thanks for coming in,” he said. “Addison, can I have a minute with Hawk?”

“Sure.” Addison left, shutting the door behind her.

Hawk pulled out a chair and sat.

“I’m reinstating you,” Cooper said.

Relief pounded through him. “That was fast.”

“It was determined you did nothing wrong.”

“Who cleared me?”

“A committee,” Cooper replied.

Led by Z.

Hawk’s phone rang and he silenced it. “We good?”

“The helo mission’s a go.”

This took the edge off the shitstorm happening at his company. Not only was he reinstated, he was going back on the front line.

“You’ll need at least two more Operatives.”

“Well, I won’t be taking Tommy.”
