“You don’t get to choose who we assign to you.”
“Why the hell not?” she bit out. “I’ve got to be able to trust that personcompletely. If I can’t stay at home, I need to be somewhere I feel safe. If you assign me some random guard, I’ll be gone in minutes.”
“Z would never let that happen.”
She grunted. “This is ridiculous. Are you going to tell me I can’t go to Stryker and Emerson’s wedding or to the hospital when Livy and Jericho have their baby?”
“There will be so much fire power at that wedding, no one would make it out alive if they tried to hurt you. The only one who won’t be armed will be the bride.”
Addison smiled. “Don’t count Emerson out. It’s easy to hide a weapon under a wedding gown. So, where are we going?”
“Black site, for now.”
“I’ll go if Hawk will meet us there.”
Sin chuckled. “You’re as strong-willed as Evangeline.”
“Then, you should be well versed in the art of compromise.”
“It’s no art, and I’m not sure how muchcompromisingis going on when it comes to my wife.”
That made her smile.
Sinclair extended his hand. “You have a deal, as long as you don’t leave his side.”
She shook it. “Make it happen.” Then, she stood and left the conference room. As she made her way to the elevator, she realized Sin wasn’t by her side. She pivoted.
He stood outside the conference room, texting on his phone. When finished, he said, “This way.” And he took off in the opposite direction.
They left through a fire door, which put them underground in a parking garage beneath the building. Another surprise.
“How long has this been here?” she asked.
“A while.”
Once at his black SUV, he opened the liftgate. Her suitcase and duffle were already there, waiting for her.
“Put on a wig. Do you have large sunglasses that cover more of your face?”
She opened the duffle, tied her hair into a ponytail that she clipped to her head. Next, she rummaged for her blonde wig and pulled it on. Using the window as a mirror, she fluffed the bangs, then found an oversized pair of black sunglasses. After slipping those into place, she closed up the bags.
“Is this okay?” she asked.
“It’s good,” he said. “If you go out, wear a disguise. Don’t tell anyone what’s going on.”
“And what will I tell people who askwhyI’m disguising myself?”
That elicited a brief upturn of his lips. “You were with the Agency for five years, and you’ve been with ALPHA for three. You’ll come up with something.”
She went to open the passenger door.
“No,” Sin said. “Sit in the back.”
“Ridiculous,” she mumbled before climbing in the back.
He got behind the wheel and headed toward the black site. Ten minutes later, he pulled off the main road and passed the No Trespassing sign. The road ended, but he continued on the well-worn dirt lane. As he pulled up to the warehouse structure, then drove around back, she wondered how this new arrangement with Hawk would play out.
“What happens if Hawk won’t partner with me?”
