With a nightcap in hand, his brother moved to the sofa. Hawk lowered the music, sat on the chair across the room and dropped his head into his hands. After a moment, he sat up straight and leaned back.
“Out with it, Nicky.”
“Not a word, to anyone,” Hawk said.
“Now, you’re just insulting me, brother.”
“Addison and I have been hooking up.”
Prescott leaned back, crossed his ankle over his thigh. “You’re smart not to have said anything in front of Cooper. I love him, but he would haul your asses in to HR.”
Both men laughed. Hawk appreciated that his brother always knew how to lighten the mood.
“I love her company, always have,” Hawk said. “I’d pick her over anyone to go on a mission with me.”
“Sounds good so far.”
“I don’t do relationships.”
“So, enjoy her company.”
“It’s complicated.”
“You’ve come a long way. Don’t be so tough on yourself. You’ve always pushed yourself to do better, do more, be there for everyone. She’s your friend. You’ve added sex. If that works for both of you, then it’s enough.”
“I gotta tell her why I can’t give her more,” Hawk said. “She deserves that.”
“Do you want more?”
When Hawk stared out the window, his reflection stared back. “Yeah, I do, but I don’t think she does.”
“Maybe if you tell her where you’re coming from, it’ll help.”
“Thanks for talking. How’s things been since you’ve been back?”
Prescott shrugged. “Who the hell knows anymore?”
“What does that mean?”
“I’m here physically, but somewhere else mentally.”
“PTSD?” Hawk asked.
“No, but I’m feeling restless.”
“How’s AE?”
Armstrong Enterprises was Prescott’s conglomerate of companies that had been in his family for generations.
Prescott rose. “Talk about fucked-up family dynamics. It makes our family seem like the most normal group on the planet.”
Hawk opened the front door to his townhome. Prescott trotted down the steps and Hawk stepped outside.
“Granddad was asking for his number one,” Prescott said. “You should swing by the hospital tomorrow and visit him.”
Hawk huffed. “I wish he wouldn’t say that out loud.”
“He sees what I see. You’re good to all of us and he appreciates that about you.”
