Ana gulped. ‘I meant what I said.’
Caio’s expression was stark. ‘You’re telling me you’re able to walk away from what we started last night? That if I was to kiss you right now we wouldn’t be making love right here within minutes?’
A wave of heat pulsed through her body.
‘Are you telling me that was enough for you?’ he demanded.
Anger at Caio’s insistence on pushing Ana to expose herself utterly made her say angrily, ‘No, it’s not enough for me. But the problem is that it never will be, Caio. I knew from the moment we kissed that I was ruined. And I know after last night that the thought of another man touching me would make me sick.’
Tears stung Ana’s eyes. She’d hoped and prayed that she could at least get off the island with her dignity intact. But now Caio would know everything and—
‘Good.’
CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE
GOOD?THEWORDstopped Ana’s whirling thoughts dead. She blinked back her emotion. Caio was looking smug. Anger turned to rage, because he waslovingit that he’d ruined her for anyone else while he would just blithely go back to normal.
Ana lifted up an apple and threw it at him. It bounced off his shoulder.
He frowned. ‘Hey, what’s that for?’
She picked up another piece of fruit—a clementine. ‘You arrogant, smug so-and-so.’
She fired the fruit at him, but he caught it.
She continued. ‘You’re so egotistical that you want to make sure I’ll never think of another man again, while you can just take up where you left off and bask in the knowledge that I’ll never forget you.’
She punctuated this by firing another piece of fruit in his direction. This time a plum. It missed by a mile. Caio started advancing on her again. She picked up a banana and held it threateningly.
He said, ‘What are you going to do? Shoot me?’
Ana scowled and threw the banana down. She stopped moving back. ‘What’s your plan, Caio? To make me admit that I still want you? Well, I already have. To take me to bed again until you’ve got me out of your system? So you can get on with your life? Well, that’s not going to happen. Call the helicopter back this minute. I’m ready to go.’
Ana had somehow backed herself into a corner. Caio was still advancing. She had nowhere to run or hide. She put up a hand to stop him, but he swatted it out of his way and scooped her up as if she weighed nothing, sat her on the island and wedged himself firmly between her legs.
Ana couldn’t speak.
‘That’s better,’ he said.
Ana opened her mouth, but he put a finger to her lips.
‘Now, are you ready to listen to why I saidgood?’
Ana folded her arms. But it was impossible to ignore Caio. His face was inches from hers, and his lean hips were wedged between her thighs. She could smell him and,Deus, she wanted to touch him.
He was waiting for her to speak. She threw her arms up. ‘Fine. I can’t move anyway.’
His mouth twitched, but then he became serious. ‘The reason I saidgoodis because I feel exactly the same way. You have ruined me forever—but it is a beautiful ruin that I will take over and over again. The thought of ever touching another woman makes me feel panicky and nauseous all at once. From the moment we met, Ana, no other woman has interested me.’
Ana could feel the colour draining from her face. ‘But I was wearing leggings...and a T-shirt.’
‘And hiding behind your hair.’
Ana couldn’t say another word. She just looked at Caio.
He went on. ‘As for the thought of another man touching you—that makes me feel violent. And that scares me, because I do not want to resemble my father in any way.’
Ana touched Caio’s face. ‘You’re nothing like your father.’
