He took a lot of time in there because before he came out, Sophie had been completely weaned off the high that needing sex fed her. Now she was contemplating why she made a move when only a couple of months ago,it could have even been weeks; he was between Bethany's legs.
"I heard you and Bethany were an item," she said as soon as he walked out. "For over a month, it seems."
Jack had only a towel around his waist, and his hair was dripping. He ran a finger through the wet hair.
"Andrew told you, didn't he?"
"Was he supposed to keep it a secret?" She sat up, not liking his tone one bit. "You told me that you didn't want commitment. You couldn't manage anyone else being in your life, and we hadn't even had sex then. Yet you found it easy to carry on a relationship with Bethany.
"The same Bethany who was rude to me and tried to make it seem like I desperately wanted your attention. You could have told me the second she showed up that she was your fuck buddy. I wouldn't have sat there and let myself believe something was between us."
"I didn't promise you anything, did I? We never established anything. What I had with Bethany was months ago, and it's different from what we did."
"I didn't—" Sophie started to defend herself and then stopped. It was true. He didn't promise her anything. They didn't even talk about having sex. It just happened, and that was it.
Then again…
"Yeah," she chuckled in derision. "I was the one who convinced myself that there was this thing between us. I thought you felt it, but as it turns out, I was delusional. Like how it was in college, right? When I thought you were in love with me, and you woke you one day, and you decided that you longer wanted to be in love with me.
"And you couldn't even do it in person. You woke up one day, and there was no courage to look me in the face and tell me that I wasn't worth your time. That's what we had…it was all in my head."
Sophie got up from the bed.
"I'm glad we had this talk. I'll see myself out. At least we've got the sex part out of the way. I can deal with my emotions my way. The same happened in college after you left and didn't look back."
"No, Sophie," Jack started to say, reaching out for her hand. She moved out of the way, shaking her head, and slammed the room door behind her.
Staying in her room felt like she was too close to him, and so was staying in the living room, so she went outside. But Sophie knew she had to wait far from him or she would cry—and there was no point crying over a man when they didn't share anything.

She eventually decided to go to her parent's house since they weren't home. Andrew and Emily had decided to give them a one-day vacation before the wedding, before another surprise that would come before the couple went on their honeymoon.
Thankfully, it was still evening, so she took a cab. But when she arrived, people were outside her parent's house, sitting on plastic chairs and drinking from bottles.
"Hey!" Jerry called out to her. "We couldn't get through to either you or Jack. We decided to have one last party before the rehearsal dinner tomorrow. You know the wedding is only two days away, and afterward, everyone will return to their crazy lives."
Yeah. Sophie knew why he couldn't reach either of them. She wasn't about to divulge that information, though. And she didn't want to talk with him, either, but he seemed to be the only one who wanted to give her answers. Like, where were her brother and Emily?
She made her way across the curb, heading for where she sat—close to the window on the left when she bumped into someone. More accurately, the person had come out of nowhere and slammed into her.
They fell to the ground, and as she stood up, Sophie realized it was Bethany.Great. Jack's fuckbuddy. She planned to avoid Bethany for as long as she was there, but Bethany stood in her way to meet Jerry.
"You slept with him, didn't you?" She pointed a finger at Sophie.
Sophie could smell the alcohol on her breath and saw that Bethany looked very drunk—a combination, which on someone like her, spelled disaster.
"I didn't sleep with him. Why would I do that? I don't care about Jack. But you do." She couldn't hold back from adding the last part.
Bethany scoffed and spat on the ground.
"You lying bitch. You were so jealous seeing us together because he dumped you in college that you forced yourself on him. Well, news flash, I am sleeping with him. Jack and I have been having sex for months."
Sighing, Sophie gave her a bare minimum clap.
"Wow, good for you, Bethany," she replied sarcastically.
"Are you making fun of me?" Bethany poked Sophie's chest with her finger as her voice rose high. "Are you making fun of me, you bitch? You don't even have a life. Who goes from being a lawyer to a nanny?
