"I bet you thought you could be like other people and then found out that you cannot be anything more than a gold-digging, low-life whore!"
Sophie frowned, and her brows shot up.
"What?! Where is this coming from?"
At this point, Bethany chose to shout.
"You pretend you don't know, but I see through you. I see through your torn pockets and the hundred dollars in your bank account. You did your research and discovered that Jack Williams has a trust fund left by his father and is an anonymous founder of the third leading software company in the country."
Sophie's jaw fell and almost hit the ground.
"Oh, good Lord, Bethany. What are you talking about?"
"He's a million—a billionaire, and you are a mooching, sad little girl. You knew that his father, one of the richest men in the country, founded one of the big three pharmaceutical companies ever."
Jack is a billionaire? How did she not know that? They rode in the same rented car. He stayed in a guest house smaller than her real house. The clothes he wore…the fact that one of the reasons why he came to Andrew's wedding was the promise of a babysitter. Which he could have hired himself.
"Don't pretend like you don't know. You can Google anything. I know you have financial issues," Bethany continued. She had gotten the attention of everyone. "But Jack preferred my company, so you wanted to eliminate me. When you couldn't, you went for the next target, Jerry.
"Since Jerry doesn't see you more than a fuck toy, you thought you would attach yourself to Jack again. How pathetic."
To say she was flabbergasted was an understatement for Sophie. She folded her arms, uncrossed them, and folded them again.
"You have some wild theories, Bethany—wild theories to support your delusions. I slept with Jack, yes, but not for the money. Heck, I didn't even know what he was doing for work until you screamed it in my ears a few minutes ago."
"Oh?" Bethany asked. Her lips curled. "Why don't we ask Jack, then? He can tell us what he knows is true, right Jack?"
Following Bethany's gaze, Sophie turned to see Jack standing a few paces from her with a stoic expression. Their eyes met for a few seconds before he looked away. Sophie held her breath, hoping he would make the crowd of curious onlookers know the truth, even though they had just argued not too long ago.
She was sorely mistaken.
Disappointed.
Jack Williams didn't say a word. He walked past her, avoided Bethany, who wanted to touch him, and entered the house. At that moment, Sophie's heart broke, and she had to walk away before the tears began to fall quickly. She didn't even ask why he had come to the house.
CHAPTER12
SHE DOESN’T WANT TO SIT NEXT TO ME.
"Areyou sure that everything is fine between you and Sophie?"
It wasn't. Nothing was fine, and Jack felt crappy as hell, but he smiled and nodded.
"Of course. Why wouldn't it be? You don't put two people in a small house like the one we lived in and expect them to be in constant disagreement. Even if we didn't like each other from the start, we would have found a way around it."
Andrew shook his head.
"You two are not in communication and there is definitely something going on."
Jack stopped fixing Andrew's tie and stared at his best friend.
"How are you so sure?"
"Because I know that the other time my sister came around and she had to follow Emily for bridesmaids dress fittings, she was upset. Also," Andrew continued before Jack could get a word in edgewise, "there's no one here who would get herthatupset except you. Why do I know this?
"Because you two dated in college and I found out the day she came to see me, very upset. She looked just like that. I also know that you two had sex. No, no," Andrew shook his head, "you don't have to explain that. You're adults. You can do whatever you want. But that's not all."
Jack sighed.
