“You're a busy guy, and you have a lot of things to deal with. My love life is not one of them.”

“No, but when my name starts to get mentioned.”

“They’ve pulled you into this?” Now I’m pissed. I sit up a little straighter in my seat.

“There she is.” Adrien smiles back.

He hands me his phone, and I see his contact for Reid is ready for me to hit the call button.

“Josh has given Dominic the rest of the day off.”

“Dominic is going to love that,” I mumble.

“He asked,” Adrien says, his eyebrows raised.

“I’m not leaving the office early. Not when I’m convinced that I know who the person is who’s done all this. Reid could lose a really important job because of this.”

“I know. I’ve already spoken to Reid. He’s a nice guy. I like him. I kind of wish we had an exclusive contract with him, but…”

“Adrien, he’s wanted this for a long time.”

“How do you know? You’ve known him for a couple of weeks. Or was this all part of you stalking him all these years?”

I know he’s pulling my leg and joking with me like a big brother.

“I’ll go and stretch my legs, maybe even walk over and see if Josh wants to do anything later. Use my office to make the calls you need.” He stares at me a moment longer than necessary, and I know he’s trying to tell me something.

“Okay,” I say.

He stares at me, then nods, and I know he still trusts my judgment. He knows I need privacy for this call, and he’s given me the ultimate privacy, his office. This room is routinely swept for bugs and all sorts. Not everyone likes the power Adrien Banks yields, and some people have lost out on investments because of him. During our first week here, a competitor bugged his office, and now it’s swept all the time.

I press the button on the phone and wait for the call to go through. He picks up instantly, and I’m so happy to hear his voice. Happier than I thought I needed.

“Hi,” I say, and I hear a slight tremor in my voice.

“Jenna?” he asks, puzzled, his caller ID confusing him.

“Adrien’s given me his phone to call you. You’re the one who told him?” I ask, already knowing the answer.

“I did. I think he likes me a little less now.”

“I doubt that.” I wipe away a stray tear that’s fallen out of the corner of my eye.

“This is a new situation. He’s never known someone I’m dating.”

“Never?”

“I’ve not dated much, and when I have, they’ve not lasted long or stopped by the office.”

“Dom and I have a plan. We’re not sure if you’ll like it, but it might be the only way we can all come out of this on the other end.”

“Reid, if you don’t do this movie, I’m dumping your ass.”

He laughs down the phone, and I wish I could see him right now. See that sparkle in his eyes he has when he laughs. “I’m going to put you on speakerphone. Dom is here with me.”

“Hi, Princess. How are you holding up?”

“I wish we were back at Reid’s beach house right now.”
