I bite my bottom lip and twist my fingers through the ends of my hair. ‘Yeah about that—’
‘Beth!’
My heart sinks as my mouth falls open.
James sighs as he places her back on the floor. ‘Come on, Beth, you even said yourself, it’s too much.’
‘I’m being silly, I know they need to go, but it’s the thought of Poppy losing her babies.’
‘She will thank us, that dog never gets a moment’s peace. If it isn’t the litter wanting her attention, it’s Dick.’
I think for a moment as I glance over to Lorena yawning amidst her milk-induced slumber. ‘Yeah, I can appreciate that.’
His eyes widen. ‘I’ll pretend you didn’t just compare us to the dogs.’
‘Can you do it, please?’ I plead with him. He tuts, pulling his phone from his back pocket. His expression hardens and I immediately sit upright.
‘Wh-what is it?’
‘It’s Jacob.’
I stand, remaining rooted to spot. He could be about to say anything and when Jacob’s concerned, I don’t know if it’s good or bad.
‘He wants to come and visit Lauren’s grave. He’ll be out of the country when it’s the anniversary of her passing so he wants to do something this weekend.’
Nodding slowly, I wait to see if he’s going to say anything more. Jacob’s not a conversation topic I feel comfortable talking about after he shut me down the other day.
‘You don’t mind, do you?’ he asks suddenly, glancing up from his screen.
‘No, of course not, he’s your brother.’
He begins to smile and steps forward, pulling me into an embrace. For a brother he was estranged from for half a decade, he sure seems overly happy to be seeing him again under less than happy circumstances. You don’t build bridges this quickly, especially after what happened between them. Something is off here and if there’s one thing I’ve learnt about James Taylor over the past twelve months, it’s when he’s up to something.
James
I rest myself back against the headboard and allow the silence of the cottage to wash over me. There’s not a dorkie in sight, the litter thankfully went in pairs, which gave Beth some comfort that they weren’t all being split up. I don’t think I’ve seen a look of relief on a dog’s face before, but I know as I stared into Dick’s eyes, he was silently thanking me. It’s the first time we’ve woken and not had a puppy on our bed and now Dick and Poppy have each other, they are less interested in us than ever, so I’m taking full advantage. My breath quivers as the sheet bobs slowly back and forth in front of me and I scramble for an unrestricted view. As my fingertips weave into her light curls, her eyes flash up to meet mine and it’s almost my undoing.
‘Can you hear that?’ I force out as I try and control my orgasm.
Confusion flashes across her face as she slows her mouth around me.
‘Exactly. Silence.’
Her laugh vibrates around my cock and a groan escapes my lips and she picks up her pace once more in response.
‘That’s it, Beth, I’m so close, keep going, sweetheart, don’t stop.’ I grip her tightly as she tips me over the edge. She continues until I eventually come down from the best blow job ever and sink back into the mattress with contentment. ‘That was amazing. Your turn now,’ I whisper. Excitement flashes across her face and she stretches out across the bed, opening herself up to me. Then Lorena’s sharp cry echoes through the room and a moan of frustration slips from Beth’s lips.
‘Hold that thought. Don’t move, I’m not done with you this morning.’
Dragging myself from the bed, I make my way towards her cry. I’ve had my fill of dogs interrupting me, but this, this I will never tire of.
Beth
He’s been on his phone all day. If it wasn’t for the earth-shattering orgasm he gave me this morning, I would seriously be considering shoving it where the sun doesn’t shine. It’s so unlike him, unless he’s messaging me, then he’s not on it. He’s definitely up to something, but whatever it is, I trust him. I know that. He’s proven it to me enough. James Taylor is certifiably one of the good guys.
I hold the leads taut as Pops and Dick strain to escape the confines of the garden, they know where we’re headed and they’re quite clearly up for a frolic in the paddock.
‘James, what are you doing?’ I holler along the path. ‘The dogs are getting restless and so am I.’
