Ian:

Yes. But this time, you get to pick.

You’ve done so well this past week, so let’s see what you come up with on your own.

Sara:

On my own???

Ian:

Yes. It has to be daring and take you further out of your comfort zone.

Nothing crazy, just something you never would normally do.

Sara:

Can’t you tell me what to do instead?

I don’t want to disappoint you with something lame.

Ian:

You could never disappoint me.

I know you’ll think of something great. I have faith in you.

Sara:

That makes one of us.

Ian:

??

Get some sleep, gorgeous. I’ll talk to you tomorrow.

Sara:

Good night, Ian. Sweet dreams.

EIGHT

I managedto snag a booth before business in the coffee shop picked up. I almost decided to work from home today…and then I didn’t. I’m trying hard not to analyze why that is and focus on my work. But then “the why” slides into the seat opposite me and smiles wide.

“Good morning,” he says. It sounds husky, like it’s the first time he’s spoken since rolling out of bed. And now I’m imagining what he looks likeinbed.

Sparing him only a glance, I keep my attention on my laptop in an effort to drown out the sexy images now invading my mind. “For you, maybe. I have a looming deadline on this manuscript. It needs a massive overhaul and is giving me a headache with intent to maim.”

“I’m sorry to hear that. Anything I can do to help?”

I type out a comment about lack of clarity as I say, “Not unless you can magically make this book better or do what ibuprofen has failed to accomplish.”

Across from me, he does that thing where he folds his arms on the table and leans in. Sensing he wants my attention, I look up at him as I take a sip of my tea.

“Did the stress of losing your panties give you the headache?”

I cough in shock mid-swallow, almost causing a catastrophic coughing fit. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I rasp out after I recover. “But it’s hardly appropriate to mention a woman’s panties.”
