“It’s also not appropriate for a woman to tuck her panties into a man’s computer bag. Didn’t stop you, though.”
The temperature in the café spikes, and I swear my cheeks must be sunburned with how hot they suddenly feel. What was I thinking coming here today after doing that? Did I think he wouldn’t mention it? Of course he would. I might as well have begged him to bring it up. And now I have to lie in the bed I made.Damn it, now I’m thinking of him in bed again!
Clearing my throat, I affect my most serious expression. “Don’t be ridiculous, Will. I did no such thing.”
Without warning, Will grabs the table and swings himself over to my side of the booth. The scent of his cologne and heat of his large body threatens to pull me in like a magnet. “What are you doing? Get back on your side.”
He doesn’t budge. “That was one hell of a calling card, Miss St. Claire. Was that your way of saying yes to my proposal?”
“No, it was not.”
“And yet, I can’t help but notice you didn’t deny doing it this time.”
Unable to keep from smiling, I say, “Ugh, you’re so frustrating and…and…”
“Go on, you can say it.”
I sigh. “And yes, okay, you’reslightlycharming.”
He chuckles from deep in his chest. “See? That wasn’t so hard. Glad to hear I’m finally wearing you down.”
“It’s just the headache talking.”
“Here,” he says. “Twist away from me.”
Before I can ask him what he means, he places his hands on my shoulders and angles me so that I’m facing the wall. “What are you doing?”
“Just trust me for a second.”
I feel his fingertips touch my temples, then he begins rubbing in small circles with gentle pressure. “Oh my God, that feels so good,” I whisper.
“That’s the point. You’re so tense. Relax your shoulders, Sara,” he says, his voice low and husky. I let my eyes drift closed as he guides my head to rest against his chest, his fingers continuing to rub the pain of my headache away. “There you go, that’s better.”
A soft groan escapes me before I can stop it, and for once, I don’t even care who hears it.
“That’s it. Good. Don’t you have anyone at home to take care of you, sweetheart?”
I intend for my answer to come out strong but it sounds more like I’m mumbling in my sleep. “I’m an independent woman, Will. I don’t need to be taken care of.”
“Every woman deserves to be taken care of, even the strong ones. It takes a lot of energy to kick ass and take names every day. You should have someone who can take over for you at night and just let you relax.”
“I’ll admit, that doesn’t sound awful,” I say. “I suppose you think this someone should be you?”
“I’m saying itcouldbe me. You won’t know unless you give it a shot. How’s your headache?”
“Mmm, much better actually. Thank you.”
I feel his breath stir the wisps of hair as he speaks low into my ear. “Want to know what I did with your panties?”
Inhaling a sharp breath, I bolt upright. When he starts laughing, I turn and narrow my eyes at him, blush be damned. He holds his hands up in supplication.
“Okay, message received,” he says, still grinning. “I’ll leave it up to your imagination. Something tells me you have the dirty mind to do it justice.”
“You’ll never know because I’m not telling you a damn thing.”
“Why the reservation, Sara? You can’t deny there’s chemistry between us.”
“No, I’m not denying that. But…” I bite my lip and try to decide how to explain my complicated situation, if it can even be called that. “I’m not really available right now.”
