“I appreciate the opportunities that this contract could have given me,” I say, my voice shaking slightly. “But I’ve realized that my true passion is in promoting sustainable travel and ethical fashion. I want to use my platform to make a positive impact in the world, not just sell products.”
My father shakes his head, clearly not convinced. “You’re making a mistake,” he says firmly. “But if that’s what you want to do, then fine. Just don’t come running back to me when you realize that you’ve made a huge error.”
I can feel tears prickling at the corners of my eyes.
“Look, Mr. Scott, I am going to need you to watch your tone. Amber might be your daughter, but she is my girlfriend, and I don’t appreciate your tone at all,” Jackson surprises us all when he talks.
I can’t believe my ears as Jackson stands up to my father like that. I’m so nervous about telling him that I’m canceling the contract, and my father’s scolding only makes me feel worse. But Jackson’s sudden defense of me is a complete surprise.

“Thank you for standing up to my father like that,” I say, looking up at him with admiration.
“Of course, I’ll always stand up for you,” he replies, squeezing my hand reassuringly. “I know it won’t be easy, but we’ll figure it out together. I believe in us. I love you. I fucking love you, Amber Scott.”
His words make me feel so much better.
