I wish she would say something, say anything.
“So,” the taxi driver says trying to break the silence. “What brings y’all down here? Business or pleasure?”
I wish I could saypleasure.
I haven’t been able to think about anything but the sweet taste of her lips, lips I may never get to kiss ever again. The thought crushes me.
“Business,” I reply regrettably.
“Okay. Good. You are in for a treat, then, because the resort I am driving you to is known for its killer heights. Don’t let it be all business. Make sure you enjoy the slopes, too.”
Olivia who was sitting in the front with the cab driver smiles at me through the side mirror. I give her a small smile back. Olivia then glares daggers at me.
Right! I promised I would fix it. I guess she meant immediately.
Amber is sitting in the back with me, but she is curled up at the corner of her seat, so far away from me it’s obvious. Instead of all the frilly dresses she had on during all the previous trips, today she is completely bundled up.
She has on a blue cardigan, a scarf, a pair of jeans that are tucked in her boots, and judging by how often she is rubbing her hands together, she is still feeling cold.
I pull off both my gloves and pass them to her. “You can have mine.”
I expect her to resist or refuse my offer but instead, she takes them from me and puts them on. “Thanks!” she whispers.
“No worries.”
Then just like that, we are back to awkward silence.
Damn it. I must try again. Hope she gives me an opening to talk to her.
“Hey!”
She lifts her eyes to mine in response.
“Do you know how to ski?”
“No.”
Again with the one-word answers.I groan inwardly.
“I could teach you if you want.”
She tries to hide the surprise that flashes through her face, but she is not fast for me to catch it. “Thanks!”
“We can start tomorrow?”
“Okay, Jackson.”
She said my name.
That’s a start, I guess.

The resort is a lot warmer than outside. As soon as we drag our bags in, we are immediately hit by the heated interior, and I let out a sigh of relief.
“God, this place is cold,” Olivia says out loud.
“Uh-huh! Let’s get checked in,” Amber replies.
