“Hello?” his voice sounds gruff and annoyed.
“Hey, Dad. It’s me,” I say, trying to sound upbeat.
“Amber, everything okay?”
“Everything’s fine, Dad.”
“Thought you needed something. I am heading to a meeting now, can this wait?”
Here we freaking go, again.
I don’t understand why we can’t just have a regular father-daughter relationship. Those long nights he spent working really did irreparably ruin our connection. This is why I vowed to myself that I would never date a man who would be too rich and busy to spend time with me.
Maybe I developed daddy issues, I guess. Or maybe I just need the validation that I am important enough to someone and that I come before his work and money.
I gently shake my head, trying to self-soothe.
“I just wanted to update you on the trip. We landed safely and we already charged the suite to the company card,” I say, hoping to keep the conversation short.
“Good, good. Make sure to keep track of all the expenses. I’ll need a full report presentation of the Cancun trip as well,” he says.
“Of course. I’ll make sure to do that,” I say, trying to hide the annoyance in my voice.
“Also, is Jackson around?” he asks suddenly.
I freeze. “Uh, no, why?”
“I’ve been trying to reach him, but I haven’t been able to get through. It’s important that I speak with him,” he says, his tone becoming more serious.
“I’ll let him know,” I say quickly before he hangs up.
I sat there for a moment, feeling uneasy. Why does my dad need to speak with Jackson? I don’t want him to get in trouble because of me.
I quickly shrug off my coat and head over to Jackson’s room.
I knock on Jackson’s door, but there is no answer. I tried a few more times, but still no response. I don’t want to disturb Olivia next door, so I slowly turn the knob and peek inside. I expect to find Jackson sleeping, but instead, I see him standing in the middle of the room, fresh out of the shower, with water droplets rolling off his perfectly shaped back. His tattoos look striking under this lighting. A towel is tied low around his waist.
My heart skips a beat as I take in the sight of him. He is so handsome, and my cheeks flush with embarrassment as I realize I am very attracted to him.
I have seen him half-naked a couple of times but the sight of him still makes my insides clench with anticipation, and something close to desire.
I try to avert my eyes but take in every exposed inch of him. I clear my throat, trying to snap out of it.
“Jackson?” I call out softly, and he turns to face me. “Sorry, I knocked, but there was no answer. My dad has been trying to reach you.”
His blue eyes are locked with mine as he nods before grabbing a towel to dry his hair off. “Thanks for letting me know. I haven’t had a chance to check my phone just yet.”
I force myself to look away from his glistening body and take in the room. It is decorated in a modern rustic style, with wooden furniture and plaid accents. The king-sized bed looks incredibly comfortable, and I can see a pile of fluffy pillows and a cozy blanket.
I clear my throat again, trying to keep my mind off Jackson’s body. “Your room is really nice. I love the wooden accents.”
He chuckles, throwing the damp towel from his hair on the bed. “Yeah, it’s cozy. I appreciate the warm decor.”
I nod, trying to stay focused on the task at hand. “My dad made it sound urgent when he was asking for you. He was heading in for a meeting so you might want to email him.”
He shakes his head, grabbing a shirt from the closet. “Nah, I’ll call him back in a bit. I’m sure it can wait another hour.”
I nod, still feeling a little flustered from walking in on him. “Okay, well, I’ll leave you to it, then. Sorry again for barging in.”
