“I’m sorry that you had to go through that. Social media can be pretty brutal sometimes,” I say, trying to comfort her, despite knowing absolutely nothing about it.

She nods in agreement. “Yeah, it can be tough. But it’s just part of the job, I guess,” she says, shrugging her shoulders.

I frown. “I don’t know if it’s right that you have to deal with that kind of negativity just because you’re an influencer. It’s not fair,” I say, feeling a little angry on her behalf.

Amber smiles at me but I can see tears in her eyes. “Thanks, Jackson. It means a lot,” she says, her eyes meeting mine.

I feel a flutter in my chest at the way she’s looking at me, and I quickly break eye contact. “No problem. Just trying to be a good friend,” I say, trying to play it cool. Because that is what we are, what we can only be. Friends. Nothing more. Friends who are nice to each other.

Really, really nice.

I am aware that I sometimes find myself saying flirty things to her, but that’s just me being a little too friendly. Nothing more.

We finish our smoothies in comfortable silence, but my mind is racing with thoughts of Amber and the negative side of social media. I wonder if there is a way to protect her from all of it.

Chapter 7

Up in the Air, Down to Earth

Amber

Therestofthetrip goes by without any hiccups.

I don’t get to spend one on one time with Jackson again, and I won’t lie, I spend quite a few minutes trying to convince myself that knocking on his hotel door and asking him to hang out would be a very stupid decision.

Most of the time I see him around the resort with Olivia, but I catch him alone a few times where we engage in small talk, talking about the weather and whatnot.

On the day of departure, I wake up early and catch a taxi with Olivia to the private terminal.

The ride is serene and slow as I soak in the remnants of the trip.

This was a lot more fun than I expected it to be.

I am just getting out of the taxi when my phone buzzes with a text from Jackson.

“I hope you are on the way to the plane.”His text makes me giddy.

“Yes. I’m in the taxi with Olivia.”I reply.

“See you soon.”His text comes in a few minutes later.

“See you.”

I drag my two heavy suitcases through the private terminal of the airport, trying to keep up with Olivia who’s leading the way. It’s early in the morning, and I’m not fully awake yet. All I want to do is get on the plane and probably fall asleep.

We finally make it to the waiting area, and I order a large coffee from the cafe. I need the caffeine boost to wake up. Olivia is on the phone, talking to someone about our travel plans. I sit down on one of the chairs and take a sip of my coffee, feeling the warmth spread through my body.

I am a little nervous about the next destination. It’s a big opportunity for me, and I don’t want to mess it up. Plus, I have no idea what to expect or what we’re going to be doing once we get there. It’s all a bit of a mystery, and I am excited and anxious.

I pull out my phone and check my social media accounts, scrolling through my notifications. There are a few new followers and comments on my latest post, but nothing too exciting. I set my phone down and continue sipping my coffee, trying to relax and enjoy the moment.

Olivia hangs up the phone as well and turns to me. “Okay, we’re all set. The plane is ready, and we can board now.”

I finish my coffee and stand up, grabbing my suitcases. “Let’s go.”

I follow her to the gate, feeling a mix of excitement and nerves. This is going to be a wild ride, and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for me. I board the plane, all excited and giddy, but still slightly sleepy. I take out my camera, snapping some shots of the luxurious interior of the plane again.

“Jackson is asking if you’d like to join him in the cockpit,” Olivia walks up to me and says, her voice barely above a whisper.
