“Row?” she asks again.
“We win again,” I say, not sure of what it means.
“Row, we can stay here and wait or catch up with them.”
I turn to face her. “Where is Sam?”
“On the island with Milo and everyone else. I stayed back with you. Are you ready to go?” She stands, pulling me with her. “You can tell me what you saw on the way.”
“The note? Did he read it?” I ask.
“I don’t think so. You would know first, and it’s killing me, so make him do it,” Lori admits. She rushes onto the dock and holds her hand out for me to follow. “So tell me what you saw.”
My feet hit the wood and I release her hand. “I saw my sister again and Cecilia.”
Our pace quickens, making our way down familiar paths.
“Past or present?” Lori huffs.
“Both. I’m confused about most of it, except one part.” I rub my forehead and think about the images and the vision.
“Well, queue the suspenseful music, Rowan. What?”
We break into a jog at the sight of Sam up ahead.
“We need to read that note.”
Chapter 27
Like Fish
“Sam!”Ireachhimbreathlessly and dig my hands through his pockets.
“What’s going on?” he asks.
Milo steps over, ready for battle, weapons in both hands, and artillery across his chest. A baby cries inside a home at our side.
“I don’t do babies. Bear kids,” Milo yells into the house. “Get the baby.”
“Bear kids?” Lori questions.
“You name them that weird BeLew thing, and I can’t call them what I want?” Milo argues.
“You don’t do babies?” Lori smarts back.
Beau walks out with Morgan in his arms. “It’s BeLew,” he corrects Milo, undeterred by the amount of firepower the man carries.
I find the note in Sam’s pocket and hold it up. He grabs my wrist and slants his eyes. “I don’t think-”
“I had a vision,” I cut him off. “It told me we have to read this right away.”
“What the fuck?” Milo stammers.
“Oooooooooo,” BeLew says in unison.
“Don’t say fuck,” I tell them, pulling the note open. My hands shake as I read the words scribbled on the page.
Sam im not crazy and I’ve been waiting for u and some guy went on the boat i think youre leaving on - it feels bad and i think youre in some kind of trouble - youre always in some kind of trouble - he was talking to a Riggs guy about you - told him it was time - said he’d see him in a few hours - im scared to ask him who he is - he has a gun and he has red hair and hes under the storage in front - if i move he will hear me so im waiting for you to give you this note im sorry im too scared
