“Okay, we will give you that. You aren’t the person people paint you out to be. You are very protective over those you love.”
“As are all of us. Do what you like but mess with my family and the bitch comes out in me.” Cash moved to me and sat his coffee down. Wrapping his arms around me, he pressed his lips to my neck.
“I do love your protective side though, Sug.” I could hear a groan from the counter.
“Do I need to go and leave you two alone?” Cash pulled back and looked over at Austin.
“No, just don’t do anything fucking stupid tonight so I can fuck my fiancée like I couldn’t last night.” I bit down on my lip to keep from laughing as those two began bickering. I loved my mornings.
Chapter Nine
Cash
After breakfast, I dropped Austin back at his place so that Vannah could go and open the shop. He hadn’t asked too many questions about why she wasn’t drinking coffee which was good. The less questions, the less lies we needed to tell to try and keep the baby a secret until she was a bit further along. I would wrap her in cotton wool if she would let me, but I knew if I tried, Vannah would kick my ass. I got to the station and went to my desk. Felix stopped by on his way to his, coffee in hand.
“So, you know there is an empty office for you right?”
“I know, it feels weird though. He has only just left.”
“He left though, bud, he isn’t dead. When we get back from the club, it’s time to move.” I raised my hand in a salute. Taking a seat in front of me, he took a drink of his coffee. “How did your brother take the news?”
“Not too well. I stupidly left him to process it and he went out and got drunk. I had to come here and pick him up after he got himself arrested for starting a bar fight.” He let out a whistle.
“The misses can’t have been happy with that.”
“Oh, she wasn’t.”
“Is he gonna be okay though?”
“Yeah, I think so. We just need to be there for him.”
“If you need anything, let me know.”
“I will, thanks, Felix.” He stood up.
“No problem, you good to leave in ten?”
“Yeah, ready when you are.” Felix moved over to his office and I looked over at the office that would be mine. Guess it was time to move. It would be a matter of time before they would replace me with another officer to be Carmella’s partner. Also meant that it was time for a visit to Ma and Pop to tell them the news. The last thing I wanted was for them to find out through someone else.

After finishing work and pulling into the driveway, I gave myself a few minutes before getting out of my truck and heading to the front door. Unlocking it and going inside, I went in search of Vannah. Finding her in the bedroom, I headed straight to her and wrapped my arms around her.
“Hey, handsome, welcome home.”
“Nowhere else I’d rather be, Sug.” She turned around and wrapped her arms around my neck.
“How was your day?”
“Long. I spent the day chasing dead ends and am no closer to finding out who killed Holly.”
“I’m sorry but is that really surprising?”
“No, not really. I just need to find out who the mystery guy she was at the club. Need to reach out to some of her friends to see if they know if she was seeing anyone.”
“Would Austin know?”
“No, he hadn’t spoken to her since the incident at his studio.”
