“Hopefully those clueless idiots can help, then.” I couldn’t help but laugh at her description of them. Dropping my head into her neck.
“I love you and your nonexistent filter, Sug.”
“I love you too, handsome.” Pulling back to look down at her, I pressed my lips gently against hers. I honestly don’t know what I would have done without her most days. She is my silver lining when all I see is dark clouds.
“You don’t have plans for dinner, do you?”
“No, I was waiting until you got home to see what you felt like. Why?”
“Well, I need to go and see Ma and Pops, so I called them earlier and Ma told me to bring you and come for dinner.”
“I’m good with that. Why don’t you get changed and we can head over when you are ready. Telling them about the promotion?”
“Yeah, I think I need to before someone else beats them to it. Felix convinced me to move into the office today, so it is only a matter of time before they get my replacement.”
“I get that. Carmella is gonna need someone new so best to do it now.”
‘That’s what Felix said.”
“He is a smart man, then.” She grinned and patted her hand against my shoulder. “Go on, get changed out of that and into something more comfortable.”
“I thought you liked me in my uniform?”
“Oh, I do but if you stay in that, then my mind is going to keep thinking naughty thoughts about removing each piece and picking up where we left off last night, but if we do that, we won’t get to go see your parents so move it, mister.” I let out a groan.
“That’s not cool, woman, not cool at all.” She grinned and stood up on her toes to press her lips against mine.
“I’ll make up for it later.” She pulled away from me and left the room. Watching her as she walked out the door, I shook my head and moved to our closet. Taking off my belt and undoing my pants, I pulled my shirt out and took it off, throwing it in the washing basket. Kicking off my shoes and putting them in their place so that Vannah didn’t kill me, I removed my belt from the loops on my pants and put it in the cubby that it belonged in. Stripping out of my pants, socks and boxers, I made my way toward the bathroom. A quick shower and we would be on our way.
Pulling up at Ma and Pop’s place an hour later, I moved round to open Vannah’s door for her. Once she was out, I shut it and locked the car behind her. Taking her hand, we moved up to the front door. I was about to knock when it opened.
“Don’t you dare knock on that door, boy.”
“I’m sorry, Ma, too many close calls of walking in on you and Pops. I knock and make a racket before I enter the house now, we all do.”
“Yes, and one of these days, Cash, you will wake the dead with the racket you make.” Ma pulled me into a hug before turning to Vannah and hugging her too.
“You two need to come around more. Look at the pair of ya, skin and bones.” I rolled my eyes which caused Vannah to laugh. Ma turned and saw me doing it, which earned me a whack with her towel. “Boy, don’t you sass me!”
“I didn’t say a word!” I couldn’t hide the laughter in my tone though.
“You didn’t need to. Your face said it all, just like it did when you were growing up.” I shook my head and walked further into the house.
“Where is Pops? I need backup here.”
“Sorry, kid you are on your own!” I heard him yell out from his study. Heading in that direction, I leant against the doorframe and watched him.
“So, you want your first born dead, then?”
“No, I just plan to get laid after you pair leave tonight.” I hid my face in my hands.
“I had to open that door, didn’t I?” He gave me a grin and moved over to me, patting his hand on my shoulder.
“You did, kid, you should know better than that.” Moving past me, he wrapped his arms around Vannah and gave her a hug. From the day Beau brought her home to meet them, when they were working on a school project together, they had loved her. If we hadn’t ended up together, I swear they would have adopted her. She loved them just as much though. They gave her that missing piece she’d never gotten from her parents.
“So, Mom said you had something to tell us. Finally set that wedding date, then?”
“Not quite but we are talking about it more these days. Take a seat.”
