With his hands holding my hips tight, he began to fuck me again, hardagain, with one foot up on the bed to get the angle just right. He knew just where my g-spot was; he’d helped me find it, after all, and it definitely didn’t seem like he’d forgotten how to get there.
His breath grew ragged as his own climax drew closer, and he reached down to rub my clit again, wanting me to come with him. “I know you’ve got one more for me tonight,” he growled. “Give it to me, Tonia.”
Fuck, fuck, fuck. That was the Cam I had missed the most. I had loved the sweet guy, the one who would give anyone the shirt off his back, the one who supported and loved me back, but the firm, sexy side of him had been the reason I fell for him so hard and completely. He knew just when to put all that respect to one side and give me exactly what I needed.
And I gave it right back to him, coming with him, feeling the wave of pleasure hit me one more time as he began to pump into me, or at least into the condom he had wrapped himself in, as always.
His movements gradually slowed, then stopped, as the frenzy that had consumed us both began to subside, and a moment later, he pulled out of me. With him no longer supporting me, my limbs gave way as I collapsed down onto the bed, resting my head against the pillow while he took the condom off and tossed it in the trash. The bed dipped beside me as he joined me on the bed, both of us staring up at the ceiling rather than at each other as we tried to process everything that had just happened.
For several minutes, neither of us spoke, as though we were afraid of breaking the spell that had descended on the room. That had been as close to perfect sex as I’d ever had, and I knew, I justknew, that whatever words were uttered next were going to change everything.
Sometimes, I really hated being right.
Cam spoke first, turning to me with a tentative smile. “Well, that was one hell of an apology.”
I almost smiled back until I realized what he meant, and any hint of good humour fled my body as ice ran through my veins instead. “Wait. Do you think that was meapologizing?”
His brow furrowed in confusion, his brown eyes looking lost beneath his damp hair, beaded with sweat from the exertion of what we’d just done. “Wasn’t it?”
Hehadto be kidding. “You really don’t get it, do you?”
Why did I expect anything different? With frustration seething beneath my skin, I got to my feet and began to gather up my clothes while Cam sat up, watching me in bewilderment. “What are you doing?”
“What does it look like, Einstein? I’m going home. This was a mistake.”
His jaw clenched, hard, as his nostrils flared. “Don’t run away again, Tonia. We can’t just pretend this never happened. This was something real.”
“Really stupid.” My hands trembled as I tried to rebutton my blouse. “Don’t worry. I’m taking the blame for this one. I started it, and it was a stupid idea. I can own that.”
“Can’t we talk about this?” He made no move to stop me, staying on the bed, still naked as he made his appeal. Although he asked the question, it looked like he already knew what the answer would be and he was right.
“I don’t think so.” Patting my pockets, I double checked that I still had my keys and wallet. Luckily, I had dropped everything in one place on the floor when I stripped earlier, so nothing had fallen all out of place. I had everything I’d arrived with, except my self-respect. “I’ll see you in the office tomorrow.”
With that, I walked away, my emotions in even more turmoil than they had been when I got there. So much for keeping things professional.

The silence that descended over the room once Tonia shut the front door of my apartment behind her felt unbearably heavy, making it hard to breathe.
What the hell was that?
The best sex of my life, that much I knew, but beyond that, I didn’t have a clue what to make of it. If I weren’t completely naked and my cock still slightly sticky, I would have to wonder if I’d imagined the whole thing.
It came so completely out of the blue, like a shooting star lighting up the sky for one brief, shining moment, and now that it had gone, the world seemed a little bit darker, though in reality, it had just gone back to the way it was before.
At that moment, I only understood one thing for certain: I couldn’t put myself through that again. I couldn’t get my hopes up and imagine some kind of future with her only to have her walk away without a backward glance. It nearly broke me once before, and I didn’t know if my heart would survive a second time.
“Remember, don’t say anything to anyone about prom until I’ve talked about it with Tonia,” I told Marley that morning, the morning it all fell apart, after I made sure she had breakfast and all her stuff for school. For the previous two weeks, I’d been looking after her during pretty much every spare minute I had, and I felt pretty sure that without me, she’d have been dead or in jail.
I hadn’t told anyone about her situation, out of respect for her wishes, but I would have to tell Tonia that day. I would have to tell her everything.
Not saying anything to Tonia before then had been eating me up inside. I’d never kept a secret from her before, and I’d definitely never lied to her face, not like I did when she asked me if I knew Marley. She knew everything about me, every stupid, embarrassing thing I’d done or thought I ever had. I could trust her with anything, and though I’d tried to explain that to Marley, she just didn’t see it. She thought telling Tonia would mean the whole world would know about it, and the thought nearly sent her into a panic.
I found myself torn between two promises: one to the girl I loved, to always be truthful with her, and the other to this girl I now felt responsible for, to keep her secret. Marley’s mother was dying and her father had all but abandoned her. She was emotionally fragile and the stress seemed to be making her a little mentally unstable too. When I told her I couldn’t take her to prom, she got so upset that I honestly feared she might do something extreme if I didn’t agree. That fear had been the only reason I gave in, but the truth was that I had no intention of actually doing it.
Prom had been something Tonia and I looked forward to for years, and she deserved to have the night she’d dreamed of. If I could, I would make every one of her dreams come true. Seeing that beautiful smile and the trusting look in her deep blue eyes honestly meant the world to me, so when I told Marley I would take her, I lied, simple as that.
My actual plan for that morning was to talk to Tonia, to tell her everything, and to ask for her help. Together, we could find a way to get Marley to the prom and make sure she had a good time, something she could happily share with her mother. It would still be a good experience for her, just not with me.
