Huffing a laugh, I shake my head. “Looks like we’re in the same club then. Interested in people who don’t fall in love.”
I smirk as the corner of her lips curve up, and then I nod toward the cabin. It’s late—I’m sure Kylo’s waiting for her to return home safely. We both get out, and I walk along the path to the guest house alone.
“Goodnight, Lex.”
“Goodnight,” I say, waving goodbye.
The sensor lights switch on as I walk along the deck, and my stomach sinks as something dark scatters into the woods the closer I get to the guest house—too big to be a critter, so it’s probably the neighbor’s black cat that fucks with the garbage bins. I narrow my eyes once the beast comes prancing toward me from the same direction and sits by the door. She perks my mood as I scoop her into my arms, and her head brushes against my chin while purring.
“Do we need to have the talk?” I chuckle, kissing her fuzzy face, then enter my home, which feels warmer tonight.

I had planned on asking Kylo to drop me off at the repair shop today to pick up my Mustang, but when Sadie hit me with her cat-sitting offer, I couldn’t see a better way to spend my Sunday afternoon than with my favorite girl, though once I walked into the cabin to find the woman who’s taken over my dreams sitting on the couch, I knew what Sadie was up to. Never thought this cat’s obsession with me would come in handy one day, and I’m glad Evie didn’t run for the hills when she noticed me.
We’ve been sitting for an hour, wanting this closeness with Evie since she placed that peach ring in my hand. The taste of peaches has been on my mind ever since, wondering if her tongue is just as sweet. Evie giggles as Jinx tries to catch the feather in her hand, and the sound is music to my ears.
She glances at me with those beautiful dark eyes, and the sunlight shining through the window brightens them to a warm chocolate brown. I could stare into them all day.
Jinx swats her hand, and Evie takes a sharp breath as her claws catch her skin. “Ow!” Observing her pinkie, she sucks on the cut, then looks down, smushing Jinx’s face. “That hurt, you little beast,” she growls playfully, rubbing her stomach next, making me chuckle. Evie glances at me and smirks. “Me being mauled is funny, huh?”
“No. I find you adorable.”
Her nose wrinkles. “I’ve never heard that before, but this girly sure is.” Kissing the top of Jinx’s head, Evie pouts when she jumps to the floor, tired of the attention, and goes about her business.
Now that we’re alone, I scoot closer, resting my arm on the back of the couch, and she glances at me before staring out the window ahead. “Want to play pool?” I ask.
“Kylo doesn’t have a table.”
“No, but I do at my place.”
Her brows furrow. “Your place?”
“I live in the guest house, only a short walk from here.” I point to the right, where the building resides.
“Oh. Well, I’m down if you don’t care about losing.”
Chuckling, I raise a brow. “One thing you should know, Peaches. I never lose.”
Her eyes narrow, then she stands, crossing her arms. “Alright, prove it then. Just a fair warning, I learned from the best.”
Standing from my seat, I move in close, and she takes a step back. “Once I win, what do I get as a reward?”
She huffs a laugh and places her hands on her hips. “Wow, you’re a cocky bastard, aren’t you?”
“Well, you ain’t no princess.”
Evie sucks her teeth, then she smirks. “Fine. If you beat me, I’ll let you take me on that date.”
Hello.“Deal—”
“Ah! But,whenI win, you stop calling me Peaches.”
Blowing a deep breath, I hold my hand out, and she shakes it. “I look forward to taking you out.”
“We’ll see.”
I gesture towards the back door, and we both walk along the deck, Jinx a few steps behind us. As we reach my front door, I wait for both of them to enter, her sweet flowery scent urging me to walk in behind her and draw my nose closer.
