“I would imagine so,” I said. “Why? You don’t think I should?”
“Is Dana reserving two rooms?”
I didn’t answer right away.
“Cane,” he said in a warning tone. “What are you doing?”
“Nothing.”
“I saw the way you were looking at her last week,” he said. “This sudden urge to go out of town for a couple of days seems just a little suspicious.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I said. “I always travel.”
“Don’t act like this is normal,” he said. “You’re totally hoping to put the moves on her.”
“No.”
“You need to make sure you book two rooms,” he said. “Don’t screw this up. You can’t just get another fake wife after you introduced her to John. Noelle didn’t seem the type to be impressed by your big—”
“Woah, you are really jumping to conclusions,” I said.
“Your big wallet,” he finished. “Just book two rooms.”
“I was going to anyway,” I said. Truthfully, I probably wouldn’t have minded one room but it wasn’t like I would know what to do with a woman these days anyway. I’d only end up making a damn fool of myself.
“Good.”
“What did you need?” I asked.
“I don’t need anything.”
“Then why did you come to my office?” I questioned.
“I wasn’t actually coming here,” he said. “I was on my way to get something to eat and heard my name.”
“Go.” I shooed him away. “I need to call Noelle and make sure she’s available.”
“Two rooms,” he said as he got up.
“I know, I know,” I said.
After he left, I quickly got up and went to Dana’s desk. She had the phone up to her ear and was making innocent small talk with whoever was on the other end. I waited while she held her finger up to keep me from saying anything. She finally ended the call.
“Yes?”
“Who was that?”
“The woman I had to beg to get your name on the party list,” she said. “You and Denton.”
“Actually, Denton will not be going,” I said. “I need you to reserve two rooms for me as well.”
“Are you whisking me away on a surprise vacation?” she said and fluttered her eyelashes.
“Sorry, but I think your husband could kick my ass with his pinky finger,” I said, laughing. “It will be me and my guest, Noelle.”
“I haven’t heard that name before,” she said with a scowl.
It was a bit of an awkward conversation but Dana was going to hear the news eventually. “My fiancée,” I murmured.
