“I’d like to go,” I repeated. “Tell him I’ve had a change of plans. When is the party?”

“Tomorrow,” she replied. “It’s rude to re-invite yourself with no notice.”

“I have a feeling he will appreciate anything he can get at this point,” I said with a snort.

“Should I book the jet?” she asked.

“Yes. For two.”

“Denton will be going,” she said and tapped on the screen.

“Denton will be goingwhere?” Denton asked from the door.

“Texas,” Dana answered. “Is that all you needed? I’m going to call his assistant and make sure this is okay. I won’t be a part of your rude behavior.”

“I’m not being rude,” I argued. “I just had a change of heart. Technically, I didn’t change my mind. You never told me about the invitation, so I never actually declined it.”

“As if you would want to go,” she said.

“I do now. Please see what you can do to get me back on the list.”

She walked out mumbling under her breath. Denton came in and sat down in the chair Dana just vacated. “Why are you going to Texas? And why am I going with you?”

“You’re not,” I said.

“But you are?”

“Yes,” I said.

“Why?”

“Remember Vern, the wood guy?” I asked.

“Yes. His grandson sold the business if I remember correctly.”

“Yes, and now he is starting another business,” I explained. “I’m going to take Noelle. I want to get her face out there. It’s a slow roll on the rumor mill.”

“Okay,” he said. “Good plan. I like it. She certainly knows enough about toys to keep a conversation going.”

“I know,” I said.

“Did you think you would ever meet anyone as excited about toys as you are?” he joked.

“No, not really,” I said.

“What does she do?” he asked. “I mean she said she spent a lot of time with kids. Does she work at a daycare? Nanny? I could see her being a nanny. She definitely has that look.”

“I think she said a nonprofit,” I answered. “I don’t know. I wasn’t paying all that much attention.”

“She’s your fiancée,” he teased. “You should probably know these things.”

“Which is why we’re going to Texas,” I said.

“You’re taking the jet?”

“Of course,” I replied.

“Staying overnight?”
