“You are right on time!” she exclaimed. “I just made some apple pie.”

“Yum,” Rob said.

Chase looked at Kailynn as they walked into the dining room attached to the kitchen.

“My mom makes the best apple pie. She uses apples from the trees out back.”

“Sounds delicious.”

Jane cut slices for the four of them and then put a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top.

“This is the best way to eat it,” she told Kailynn as she set the plate in front of her.

Kailynn looked between all of them as they took bites of the pie. Truth be told, she didn’t care for pie, especially apple pie. Something about baked apples just didn’t taste right to her. The idea of it sounded good, but it never tasted as good as it sounded.

She hesitated to say anything. Jane had already cut Kailynn a slice and put the ice cream on it, and she didn’t want it to go to waste.

She grabbed her fork and speared a chunk of apple, some crust, and a little ice cream. As Chase watched her, she took a bite. The baked apple hit her tongue, and she tried to refrain from cringing, which she suspected she did well since he smiled at her.

“Good, isn’t it?”

Kailynn forced the bite down and smiled at him, nodding. The apple taste bit into her cheeks and she refrained from gagging. She quickly took another bite of the ice cream and let it coat her mouth to cover the taste of the apples.

She speared several more chunks of apple on her forked and quickly shoved them into her mouth, chewing just enough to swallow it before shoving more ice cream in to cover the taste. Chase gave her a questioning look, but she only smiled in response.

“So, Kailynn, do you want kids?” Jane asked.

Kailynn choked on the next bite of apple she shoved into her mouth just as Chase’s eyebrows shot up.

“Mama!”

“What?” Jane asked, innocently. “I didn’t ask if she wantedyourkids.”

Rob walked into the kitchen and came back with a glass of water for Kailynn, setting it in front of her.

“Thank you,” she said, before downing half of the glass. She used that discussion as her excuse to stop eating the pie and pushed it away from her.

Jane looked at her expectantly.

Chase glanced between them. “Kailynn, you don’t have to answer that.”

“It’s okay. Yes, I think I want a few.”

Jane looked between Chase and Kailynn, and then her eyes lit up. “So I could be a grandmother in just a few short years!”

“Mama!”

Rob laughed and looked at Kailynn apologetically. “Don’t mind her. She’s just eager for grandkids.”

“Can you blame me?” Jane asked. “I expected Chase and Allison to give me some, but it never happened! And Derek never dates anyone, so I don’t think I’ll get any from him anytime soon.”

Chase’s eyes looked as if they were going to bug out of his head. “Mama!”

“Can you blame me? You two were together for a long time! If I’m being perfectly honest, I thought you were going to tell us Kailynn is pregnant since you got together with her so quick after your divorce ended.”

Derek laughed loudly, surprising them as he walked through the kitchen door.

“Sounds like I’m missing a party,” he said.
