We had secret hospitals in the city. It was often abandoned buildings that looked like nothing interesting on the outside, but a whole other world existed inside. I had to go to one of them and get checked out. I couldn’t be sure I was really pregnant before I did. I couldn’t ask Damon to drive me though …

I looked around for a solution, only for my eyes to land on the many car keys hanging on the wall further away. Could I? I knew it was a bad idea. I had only had two lessons on how to drive, but I couldn’t tell my brother before I knew, and if I tried calling a cab, he would quickly notice. I took a deep breath and then walked over and grabbed one of the keys.

“Don’t let me crash,” I begged as I squeezed the key in my hand and then went to the garage.

I sat in the examination room, just waiting for the doctor to come back with my results. My legs were dangling over the examination table and I continued to swing them back and forth, not sure what else to do. I was so nervous because the result of my test might just turn my whole world upside down. I knew I couldn’t keep it a secret, but I feared what it would cost me if it was true that I was pregnant.

Suddenly, the door to the examination room swung open, and my doctor came inside. She smiled at me and she had a small piece of paper in her hand. She sat down on a chair in front of me, and I felt my heart stop in my chest, as I waited for her to tell me what my result said.

“So?” I asked when I felt her taking too long.

Her smile grew.

“It’s positive,” she said.

For a moment it was like my head couldn’t process her words … No, it couldn’t be.

“Are you sure?!” I asked.

She nodded.

“Positive.”

I didn’t like the double meaning here. My whole world was just crashing down, and the doctor must have noticed the dark expression on my face because her smile disappeared.

“I’m guessing this wasn’t the news you had hoped for,” she said.

I shook my head.

“You can’t really say it was …”

“Do you want to talk about your options then?”

“Options?” I asked.

“You know you don’t have to give birth if you don’t want to,” she said.

“You mean …”

“Abortion, yes,” she said. “Or you could give the child away as well, but you will be putting your body through a lot.”

I sighed and looked down, shaking my head a little.

“I don’t think I could give it away,” I whispered.

“That’s understandable,” she said. “It’s not easy. Neither is the choice for abortion.”

“I just … I never thought I would be in this position,” I said, feeling the tears press in my eyes.

“Is the father in the picture?” she asked.

I shook my head and wiped some of my tears away.

“No … yes, not really,” I said. “It’s complicated.”

“I understand,” she said. “You can take some time to think about it. You are not far along.”
