I nod before realizing that she can’t actually see me. “Yeah, that’s the one. Just as I started working for Wyatt too, so we’ve crossed paths a lot.”
“I didn’t know you were working for Wyatt now?”
Oh God, we have missed out on way too much, haven’t we? I’m going to have to go back to the beginning of the story so I can fill Emily in on everything.
It’s a lot, and I don’t have much time, but I spill it all out to her as best as I can.
“Wow, so you guys have been fooling around?” she gasps once I get to the end of the story. “And then he took you out on a date? But now he’s gone again.”
“Right.” I sigh heavily. “That’s shitty, isn’t it? Just as we talked about him meeting Mya, he runs off and starts doing whatever in New York. It’s shitty, isn’t it?”
“What an asshole. I’m going to kill him,” Emily growls. “I will call him right now and give him a piece of my mind. How dare he?”
“No, don’t do that,” I warn her, because I know how quick she can be to react to anything. “I still have to work with Wyatt. I don’t want things to start getting awkward, you know? It’s hard enough as it is.”
“I will tell you one thing, you need to get a new job,” Emily warns me. “For your mental health. There is no way that you’ll be able to get over everything while you’re still working with Wyatt. I know it’s probably a good job and you get paid well for it, but think about yourself. Mya too. This is too much.”
My heart sinks. A part of me already knew that, but I’m scared to do it. I guess this is why I rang Emily, so she would be the one to push me forward and make sure I do the right thing.
“You think so?” I reply quietly. “I’m nervous about it.”
“I know you are, but you need to get your big girl panties on, and do it. For yourself.”
I suck in a sharp breath and heed Emily’s warning. She’s right, the longer I wait, the harder it’s going to get. I have to just grab the bull by the horns.
“Yeah okay.” I nod determinedly. “Okay I’m going to do it now.”
“Wishing you luck,” Emily declares in a sing song tone of voice. “Let me know how it goes. I will be thinking of you and crossing all my fingers for you.”
I hang up the phone but don’t go back inside right away. I pace up and down trying to gather some inner strength to do this. Wyatt is a good guy and he does know more than most. So he will understand, I’m sure of it. I just need to be brave.
Eventually, because I can’t stand winding myself up any longer, I head back inside and go straight for Wyatt’s office. I can feel the pressure of everyone’s eyes upon me as I go. I’m sure everyone is wondering what the hell is going on with me. Well they will find out soon enough. I don’t think they need to worry; the gossip will spread quickly.
“Wyatt?” I ask as I lightly knock on the door. “Do you have a moment?”
He smiles and invites me inside.
Nervously, I edge my way over to the chair in front of his desk to take my seat. The last time I will ever sit in this seat, because I need to leave right now. I can’t be in this place any longer. It’s too much for me. He has to understand that, right?
Oh God, now I’m not sure about anything anymore…
“What’s going on, Lexi?” He leans back in his chair and narrows his eyes on me. “Has this got something to do with my brother, because I warned him not to hurt you…”
My heart sinks further. Even Wyatt knew that this would all go to shit. Why was I the only person who couldn’t see it? I’m so freaking embarrassed. My eyes hit the floor hard because I don’t even know if I can look at him anymore.
“It’s not so much me that I’m worried about,” I admit honestly. “It’s Mya. I mean, he promised to meet her, and I know she really wants to meet her father…”
“Wait, what?” Wyatt stares at me in shock. “What do you mean?”
“I mean Josh finally agreed to meet Mya, but then he left, and honestly working here is getting a bit too much for me. I think it might be better for me to leave…”
“No way.” Wyatt shakes his head right away. “No way. I’m not letting you leave. You can’t stop working here because of him. That isn’t right. But erm, what do you mean again?”
I narrow my eyes curiously at him. “You know… that Josh is Mya’s father.”
All the color drains from Wyatt’s face as he takes that in.
What the hell is going on? He knows about Mya; he has always known. He’s the one person who has always known…
