PROLOGUE – LEXI
“Oh my God, Lexi, can you believe it?” Emily cried throwing her hands in the air barely able to contain her excitement. “We’redone! It’s over. Thank God. High school is doneforever, and now we can have the summer of our lives before it’s time for LA baby.”
Her excitement is contagious and I have to admit, I’m over the moon about going as well. Beaufort is just fine as a town, and South Carolina is okay as a state, but me and Emily have much bigger plans. We want to take the world by storm, which is why we both applied to the same college, and why we’re over the moon to finally get to see what the rest of the world lives like.
Well, the people in LA, anyway.
“It is a bit weird though, isn’t it?” I ask as I take a look around the party, being held at Jayde’s house of course, because she’salwaysthe one hosting the parties. “To think that this might well be the last time we see some of these people. People who we’ve seen every day…”
“Urgh yeah, people I’ve hated seeing every day.” Emily says with an exaggerated roll of her eyes. “I can’t wait to get away from most of these assholes. Good riddance to them.”
I know what she means. High school hadn’t exactly been easy for us, but that doesn’t mean I don’t have a little blast of sentimental sadness swirling in my heart. I don’t even know why. Probably because it’s the end of an era and everything is about to change…
“Oh. My. God!”
Emily grabs my arm so hard; I can’t remain deep in my thoughts. Probably for the best, I don’t want to end up crying. How lame would that be?
“Look who it is. Look who itactuallyis. This is fate, Lexi. This is it, a sign from the heavens or whatever.”
I shake my arm away from her with a wince. “What the hell are you talking about?”
“It’s Josh. Josh freaking Macauley. Did you know he was here?”
A shudder races down my spine. She’s joking, right? Shehasto be joking. Josh left for college last year and hasn’t been back since. I was under the impression that once the torturous crush that had haunted me for most of my high school life finally left for college, that would beit.
It hurt to know he was gone, but I had accepted it because I had no other choice.
But now he was here. At my graduation party and I don’t know what to do about it. I might as well be frozen to the spot, staring at him like an idiot.
“Come on, Lexi, this is your chance,” Emily whispers into my ear. “Go, flirt with him. Throw caution to the wind. Who knows what will happen?”
I swallow hard and nod. If I don’t take this chance now, it’ll never happen again.
Ever.
I will never get this lucky a second time. I also had a couple of drinks in me, from the punch, whatever’s in that – so it has to be now.
Only problem is I’m terrified.
Shaking.
My heart’s pounding and I’m trembling. It doesn’t matter how much I try and get air into my lungs, it isn’t enough.
I’m a mess.
“Go on.” Emily nudges me forward. “Go, you can thank me for this later.”
I kinda stumble because I’m not expecting the push.
Thankfully I manage to regain my upright position just in time.
Thatwould have been humiliating.
Anyway, Josh is sharing a beer with one of the guys, laughing at a joke he told, so he isn’t looking my way. I have a couple of seconds as I walk, to gather my shit together and figure out what I’m going to say.
Because really, what the hell amIgoing to say to Josh Macauley? Argh, this is a mistake, isn’t it? We know one another, because everyone from my high school knows everyone else, but we don’t exactly talk. We don’t run in the same circles. We never have, which is why someone like me has never stood a chance with someone like him.
But you know what they say,I try my best to convince myself.Graduation parties are supposed to be this magical night where anything can happen and unresolved feelings are suddenly exposed right?
