“Oof!”
Oh, shit! I have no idea what’s happening, but now I’m not focused on walking towards Josh. There’s a radiating burning sensation on the right side of my head and everything is blurry. Fuck, I think I might be falling, am I falling?
Can I stop myself from falling?
It’s all happening at the speed of light, much too quickly for my liking. I don’t stand a chance of stopping this nightmare. But at the same time, it’s all in slow motion, completely out of control.
Nothing is certain.
Not until I slam against the floor so hard the wind is knocked out of my body completely. Sounds stop, they become as blurry and disorienting as the sights.
Everything hurts, and just for a split second, I feel like I want to scream…
“Oh, dude, I’m so sorry.”
Hands rest on my shoulder.
An unfamiliar face joins the voice I don’t know. “I didn’t see you there when I kicked the soccer ball. I should never have kicked it like that inside the house anyway. I am such a prick…”
“Nurgh, urgh, tsfine,” I mutter, but I don’t know if I’m making any sense. “M’okay.”
“Max, buddy, get out the way.” Someone tugs the football idiot away from me. “That was one hell of a kick. Do you want to take that damn ball outside? I’ll check on Lexi.”
Now, I know I’m fuzzy and not seeing straight, but I swear the arms that wrap around me and lift me up from the floor as though I weigh nothing belong to the one person I want to connect eyes with.
Those piercing baby blues look a hell of a lot like Josh’s.
“Hold on to me,” he whispers in a warm, chocolatey smooth voice that trickles right down my spine. “That’s it, put your arms around my neck like that.”
“But that will make me want to kiss you.”
Outwardly, I giggle, but inwardly panic sets in. I didn’t say that out loud, did I?
No, probably not.
I’m sure I just thought it. And even if I did say it out loud, he probably didn’t understand me. I’m not making any sense. It’s best for me to just look at him… silently.
Fucking hell, he’s hot, isn’t he? It isn’t just the eyes or the strong muscular arms. I love his chiseled jawline as well. The dimples that pop when he smiles. His smell…
“Here we are,” he declares as he rests me down on the edge of a bed. I don’t know whose bed it is, but it probably doesn’t matter. Jayde is from old money and lives in an actual mansion. Most of the spare rooms in her home are taken up on party nights. Her parents don’t care, they spend too much of their time in Europe to worry about her.
“Let me take a look at you.”
Oh my God, his hands are all over me, lightly grazing my skin as he checks me over to make sure that I’m okay. He must be able to see the reaction that I’m having to him. He must know at this point that I’m close to falling apart.
Yet he remains calm and in control, focused on my face like he’s a doctor and I am merely his patient. If I couldn’t still hear the music thundering away down the stairs, then I might be able to lose myself in that little fantasy…
“Well, your face is a little sore, and you look a little dizzy, but other than that, I think you’re going to be okay, Lexi.” He gives me that heart stopping smile again. “How are you feeling?”
“Embarrassed,” I admit with a groan. “I bet I looked like a right fool.”
He chuckles throatily.
“No way. Max is the only one who looks like a fool. What an idiot, kicking a ball around like that in the house. Jayde would have killed him if had seen him.”
His laugh is so sweet that I can’t help joining in.
This should be awful, I should be struggling to get a word out with Josh because I’ve never had much of a chance to before, and I was practically knocked out in front of him, but there is something about him that makes it all so easy.
