Her heart throbbed hard in her chest, over and over, squeezing. He does want to go out with Fried Chicken Squirrel Girl!
“Oh, well, yes. I wouldn’t mind.” She grabbed her cellphone.
“Let me just hand you my card.” Officer Mason extended an arm inside the window, his business card in hand. As she reached out to retrieve it, the bag from the passenger’s seat moved—and out poured Mr. Peter. Reporting for duty…
Felicity saw stars.
She saw bombs.
She saw visions of Vietnam when her sex toy, still in its packaging, plummeted to the floor in full view. The large phallic shaped object with beads and rotation rings, buttons and fancy switches, and a plastic nut sack to boot, lay there on its side… like the dead, smashed, fried squirrel.
She blinked. Batted away embarrassed tears. Inexplicably, she even dared herself to look at Officer Mason. On the count of three, she finally managed. He looked stone-faced. And then, his lower lip quivered. He quickly straightened up, cleared his throat, and rolled along, like a true gentleman.
“So, there’s my number, Felicity. My first name is Brett.”
“Thank you for your help tonight, Brett…”
“I think you’re stunning… really pretty smile, too, and you have to admit, despite the inconvenience, the issue with your car tonight is sorta funny.”
She nodded in agreement and could no longer hide a smile.
“I will definitely remember this night.” It will haunt me for years to come.
“I would really love it if you’d give me a call soon, and let’s talk. Get to know one another.”
“I’ll call you. I’d like that, too.”
He stood straight and patted the top of her car. “Well, Felicity, stay warm, and happy holidays.” Turning, shoulders back, he walked across to the street to the guy screaming on the sidewalk about his purloined license plate.
She sat there for a bit, staring at the business card with ‘Officer Brett Mason’ printed on it, then slipped it in the cup holder before driving off. Just then, the Christmas music came to a halt on her phone.
“Thank you for callin’ AAA. How can I help you?” came a woman’s sleepy voice. Felicity rolled her eyes and ended the call, not bothering to utter a word, then turned on the radio where The White Stripes’ ‘Little Acorns’ was airing.
