LIAM

I walkin and find Ivy fast asleep, but that’s not what concerns me. Her other arm is bubbling up. Her entire forearm, from her elbow to wrist, is bubbling up with pus-filled blisters. This is not good. I’ve never even seen an infection like this.

Sprinting out to the nurse's desk, I practically yell, “Get me Kane on the phone, stat!”

She hands me the phone, “Xander I need you in Ivy Reynold’s room. The infection is worse. I don’t know how the nurses didn’t see this. I went in and it’s serious.”

He informs me that he’s in with a patient but will be here in a few minutes.

I go and sit with Ivy while I wait for him.

When he finally comes in, he glances at her arm, shock displays on his face, his eyes go wide.

“Jesus, Liam. I’ve never seen a staph infection this bad.”

“What are we going to do?” I ask. I’m a fucking doctor, but at this second, I’m at a loss. How are we going to save this little girl? I failed Mercy once with her sister and I can’t do that again. If Ivy dies, I’m worried that Mercy’s heart will go too. I can’t let that happen.

“We are taking her in for another surgery. I also want to run tests. I have a feeling if it looks this bad that it might be in her blood.”

“Sepsis?” I gasp. Fuck. This is worse than I even thought. Sepsis? Her organs could shut down and she could die, fast.

“I’m moving her to the burn unit. Everyone that goes in to see her is to be gloved, and gowned up, as well as a mask. No exceptions. Make sure Mercy knows. Do you want to wake her up and tell her? I’m going to have her prepped for surgery immediately.”

I shake my head, “Yes.”

“Okay get your PPE on.”

I grab my supplies and get them on quickly before walking back to Ivy’s bedside. I touch her hair, “Sweet girl, wake up for a minute.”

She stirs and instantly sobs, “My arm. Ow.”

“I know, honey. They need to do another surgery.”

“No. I don’t want to go to the bottom again.” She’s referring to her blood pressure.

“It’ll be okay. They are more prepared this time. They’ll be watching your blood pressure closely; it’s going to be okay.”

“I want Mercy!”

“Do you want me to call her so you can talk to her on the phone?”

She nods, “I’m scared.”

“I know. It’s going to be okay. Let’s call Mercy.”

Pulling out my phone, I find her name and click call.

“Liam, I’m on my way. Your car is just fine.”

“I’m sure it is. Listen, Ivy is being taken in for emergency surgery. I’ll explain when you get here. But she needs to talk to you.”

“Of course, put it on speaker phone.”

“Mercy?” Ivy says, between sobs.

“Hi, sweetheart. I know you’re scared but it’s going to be okay.”
