Okay, so she’d cleaned the cabin.
That was all well and good.
That didn’t mean she was an admirable person who deserved his forgiveness. She just really didn’t want to marry that Aidan guy. That’s all.
His gaze tracked to the woodpile, and his jaw dropped.
Hang on.
She choppedwood?
He stepped into his hiking boots and walked over to examine the damage.
She’d smashed the daylights out of one piece. What had she been thinking at the time? He swallowed hard. Maybe he didn’t want to know. Especially if she’d been thinking about him.
Nell appeared at the back door. “Want me to clean those boots?”
“What?”
Her gaze landed on the boots on the stoop. “They’re caked with mud. I can wash them off with the hose if you want.”
Wait. “I thought you were roasting Brussels sprouts?”
“I’m good at multitasking.” She grinned, and his heart stuttered. He could just bet that she was. She could probably cook and clean and do that domestic-goddess thing to him all at once. And cast a spell on him, too. Oh man, this was tricky territory.
Red flashing danger lights glared in his head.
He gulped. “O-kay,” he said slowly. “Sure.”
She took his boots and carried them, sort of limping/skipping over to the hose caddy, where she cranked on the spigot. Then she stood back and began washing down his boots using the nozzle attachment. She swished the hose from side to side, her backside swaying with the motion. Grant tried not to think about that. He tried to figure out what she was up to instead.
He set his hands on his hips. “Has something come over you?”
She looked up. “Like what?”
This was not the Nell from yesterday. This was like Super Nell on cleaning steroids. “I mean, why are you being so…”
“So what?”
Flirtatious? Alluring? Awesome?
No. None of those would work.
He hunted desperately for the mental stop sign, then—whew!—found it.
He cleared his throat. “Easygoing?”
Her eyes sparkled. “Because I’m an easygoing person.”
“Don’t think so.”
“What?”
“I think you’re up to something.”
“Oh yeah?” she asked impishly. “Like what?”
“Like I don’t know. Something.”
