She held a devilish gleam in her eye, and his pulse raced. It was like the sense that animals get before an earthquake hits, or the calm before a storm.
“You mean, this?” She wheeled the hose on him, dousing his chest with an icy blast. The water was freezing cold.
“Hey, stop!” he yelled, but he was laughing. What had gotten into her?
She giggled and sprayed him harder, showering him from top to bottom. “Looks like you need some cleaning off, too.”
Gooseflesh rose on his arms. “Nell,” he growled. “You’d better watch it.”
She giggled more. “You wanted me to clean today, so now I’m cleaning.”
He leaped after her, and she dropped the hose and raced away. But she wasn’t fast enough with her compromised ankle. He caught her by the waist. “So you think this is funny?”
He tugged her up against him, her back against his chest.
She doubled forward, cackling harder. “Yeah. Yeah, I do.”
He nabbed the hose off the ground and shot a burst of frigid water down her back.
“Argh! Ooh, you!” She spun on him and yanked the hose away, dousing him in the groin.
He yelped.Crap that’s cold.“Oh, now that’s playing dirty.”
She laughed. “Not as dirty as you play.”
He latched onto her and pulled her close, her chest pressed to his. His heart boomed like a thundercloud, and tiny electric tingles coursed through his veins. Her clothing was soaked, and so was his, but he was anything but cold. He was sizzling. Hot. His muscles tensed.
“Want to play dirty, Nell?”
She dropped the hose to the ground. It shot a steady stream of water across the backyard.
A blush swept her cheeks, highlighting her freckles.
Damp tendrils framed her face.
Man, she was a beautiful woman.
Tempting. Infuriating. Desirable.
His breath pulsed into the air.
Hers did, too.
“Yes,” she said.
And all he could think about was kissing her senseless.
Chapter Sixteen
An earsplitting wail emanated from the cabin.
Nell blinked up at Grant. “What’s that?”
He blanched. “Smoke alarm.”
Misty and Charlotte appeared around the side of the cabin, racing toward them. Misty had a small athletic bag slung over her shoulder. Nell whirled toward them. She hadn’t even heard their car pull up. Then again, she’d been a little distracted.
“Guys! Guys!” Charlotte shouted.
