“I’ve missed you,” I said. My guard was down, pride gone, and I didn’t care if I was a total loser in the game of guile.

He quirked half a smile, his eyes still intent on mine, still waiting for something. I didn’t know what he wanted or expected, but I knew what I wanted. I stepped forward, closing the gap between us and put my arms around him, laying my head against his chest.

“I was wrong to end our . . . affair.”

Feeling the pounding of his heart, hearing it get louder and faster, I looked up at him. I felt hopeful, encouraged by the warm look in his eyes, the softening of his mouth though he still didn’t smile. He looked serious, somber, even reverent.

“Will you forgive me? Can we start over?” I whispered the words and gripped his strong arms, staring and hoping he still wanted me, could forgive me.

“I never let you go, Melissa. I kept you in my heart. I always will.” He bent his head forward and cupped my face in his hands the way he always did, the way that melted my heart and everything else inside me, and he lowered his mouth to mine.

Our lips touched, sparked everything in me to life and I felt like myself again, my true self, the unforced, un-expected self I was as a well-loved young girl. The clock struck midnight—a real clock. The big old family heirloom grandfather clock with mega chimes began belting out the hour. I felt Lucas smile against me and pull me closer.

“Sei il mio incantesimo. Sono pazzo di te,” he murmured in between buttery kisses, filling me with everything I needed and wanting more. I had no idea what his words meant, only that they were beautiful and warm and I didn’t want to let him go. Not for a long time.
