His voice left no room for arguments. She winced when he touched her cheek where the male had hit her.
“Ouch!”
“I’m sorry,” he said. “But I need to clean the cuts before they get infected.”
“Fine,” she snapped. “But be more careful with your prodding.”
“I will try my best,” he told her.
Selene didn’t know what he was using to clear the cuts, but it stung like a bitch. She had to bite her tongue to stop herself hissing from the pain.
After he finished cleaning the cuts, he covered them with a balm that soothed her skin.
“It’s going to leave one hell of a bruise,” Arun said when he was done. “I don’t think he broke any bones, though.”
“The bastard took me by surprise,” she growled.
“Don’t worry, he won’t hurt you again.”
Arun sounded just as pissed as she was, if not more so.
“Good.” Selene nodded and instantly regretted it when the room began to spin.
“Keep still,” he demanded.
When the room stopped spinning, she raised her eyebrows as she stared at him. “Don’t get all bossy on me.”
“Afraid you might like it?” he asked.
“Yes,” she grinned.
By the look on Arun’s face, he hadn’t been expecting her to say that. But what could she say? She was finding she quite liked the take-charge male in front of her. It was definitely a break from the norm.
Could she put up with it long term? Probably not. But occasionally seeing a dominate side? Hell, yes, she could get on board with that any day of the week. If only he wasn’t a Fae.
No point getting attached, he might be leaving this realm soon, her subconscious reminded her.Shut up, you!
Sometimes, she really hated her subconscious. It could be a right bastard, reminding her of things she would rather forget. And pointing shit out that she didn’t want to think about.
How had things changed so quickly? One minute she couldn’t wait to do the spell and rid the world of the supernatural creatures hunting her kind, and now she would give anything to find another way. But there wasn’t another way. She’d looked and researched for years before finally finding out about the one spell that would send them back to where they came from so Humans live in peace.
If she could find a way to get the spell to work without getting rid of all the supernatural creatures, she would do it in a heartbeat. Then, Arun wouldn’t be sent away. But then what?
Could she really ask him to give up his friends, and possibly his family, to stay with her? Would he even want to? Didshewant him to?
Selene didn’t know the answers, and there was no point thinking about it, either. Until she found the spell, she wouldn’t know what was possible and what wasn’t. She might not even know then.
Selene just hoped she would know the answers before starting the spell because there would be no turning back when it was over and done with.
How a male… a Fae at that… had changed her mind about freeing the world from every last one of them, she didn’t know. But that’s exactly what had happened.
“Are you okay?” Arun asked.
“Yeah, I’m fine,” she lied. “Just tired.”
“Get some rest,” he said. “I’ll keep watch.”
Selene didn’t need to be told twice. As soon as she closed her eyes, sleep took hold of her.
