“Yes, you have to.”
It was because of her they were making the journey to begin with. If she’d just tell him what she was trying to accomplish in the first place, then they wouldn’t have needed to cross the river to reach the cabin.
“Unless you’ve changed your mind and want to tell me now?” he asked.
“Nope,” she shook her head. “My mind hasn’t changed.”
“I still don’t understand why you can’t just tell me now,” he admitted.
“There’s some things that shouldn’t be spoken about in the open,” she said cryptically. “I learnt that a very long time ago.”
“It couldn’t have been that long ago,” he frowned. “You don’t look that old for a Human.”
“As you pointed out, I’m not a normal Human.”
“Ah, so you finally admit to being a halfling?”
Selene didn’t answer him as she strolled across the bridge. When she reached him, she stuck her tongue out and then carried on walking.
“You’ve basically just admitted it,” he said as he caught up with her. “So, why not just tell me?”
“Would it help you to know that I don’t have a fucking clue?” she asked. “I could give you a list of ideas I’ve come up with, but I couldn’t tell you if any of them are the truth. I’ve never met my father, and my mother never spoke of him.”
“Didn’t you ask her?”
“What do you think?” she snapped. “Of course, I did. She refused to talk about him. Not that I blame her. From what I could figure out from her diary after she died, he wasn’t much of a man.”
“I’m sorry.”
“For what?” she asked. “You’re not my father. You didn’t treat my mother like a piece of shit.” She gave him a sideways glance. “Well, I hope you’re not, anyway.”
Arun knew for definite that he wasn’t her father. Normally, the only time he came in contact with Humans was when he was about to kill them. He’d never touched one sexually before, had never wanted to. Until now.
Selene made him want to break all the rules he’d set out for himself when he’d first come to the Human realm. Even before the war broke out, he’d had absolutely no interest in the Humans in that way. But now? Now he wanted the one Human he probably shouldn’t want.
“Come on,” she said, before he could reply. “We haven’t got much further to go. When we get there, you can ask all the questions you want.”
She didn’t sound happy about it, but at least she was agreeing to it. It was a far cry from when they first met, and she was blasting him along the corridor of the underground building.
“I’ll lead the way,” Arun said, holding his hand out for her again.
Selene didn’t look happy about that either, but she placed her hand in his and nodded her head.
“Lead away, handsome.”
